Hi. I am new to this, not just Civ iv, but to forums as well.

Anyway, I have Civ iv (Gold) on an XP Pro desktop.

1) Program runs fine, but I have tried to back up disk one via copy, navida and Vertual Disk (8).
The VD copied fine but when starting the program, the Civ program does not recognize the disk to play the game. It loaded fine with all the disks.

2) When I tried VD 11.? it crashed system on loading into the VD.

3) I also don't seem to have the smarts to create a good back up to run from a physical drive.

help?

Leo

Welcome to CFC :band:

unfortunately the copy protection scheme used by this game requires the original disc in the drive. This forum does not allow discussion of any means of circumventing this - so in this respect no one here will be able to help you. :)

Thanks Ori,
This is strange as the game help desk says that I can make one backup of the disk, but didn't provide any help in doing so.

So....
Guess I'm stuck.

That in itself, sound dishonest. It is a good game, but it seems the publisher is not on the up and up then.

I have to admit I hate safedisc (which is the copy protection system) - and yes it is a dishonest scheme to ensure that people cannot actually use their perfectly legal right to make a backup copy of their software. Now they are not the only ones using this and there are much worse copy protection schemes out there - which companies such as EA use - however that does not make it good. That said: any way to circumvent this involves techniques that can also be used to create illegal copies - and as such it is not allowed to mention them around here :)
