Can't get my first ever use of a mod to work

I wanted to use Thal's balancer: see here.

I deleted the cache folder as instructed. I downloaded the mod file, and then copy and pasted it to my mod folder. The instruction tell me to run Civ 5, and install via the mods menu.

I started Civ 5, went into mods, clicked accept, then went to browse mods. There's nothing there. There's only the Mongol mod and that's all.

I can see the mod file in my mod folder, but the game doesn't seem to recognise the file.

Since writing this I found an older version of the mod on the in-game search tool. I downloaded it using that. The older mod appears in a list, but I still can't see how to activate it so that it takes effect. Moreover, the two mods are in the same folder; the one I downloaded and cut and pasted, as well as the one I downloaded using the in-game tool. But it's only the latter that the game acknowledges, and it won't let me activate that one.

So I have two questions: how do I get the game to see the newer version that I manually downloaded, and how do I activate it?

I can already tell you that Thal's mod won't work correctly with two versions in the same folder. And that you also need to delete the ModUserData folder.

I'm not certain, but I think you may be looking in the wrong folder. Isn't the Mongol scenario in thescenario folder?

Ask your questions in Thal's forum, and you're much more likely to get a useful answer.

As I said in my message, it didn't work with only one version. I am in the folders suggested to me by the mod's own instruction. I explained all of that in detail.

Actually, you explained in detail that you can't get either one to work.

After downloading mod 1: "there's nothing there"

After downloading mod 2: "I can't see how to activate it"

But you seem to have it all figured out now, so have fun with the mod.

Right click steam from location and "Run as administrator" - can help with the comp blocking steam/civ from downloading/installing mods.

Also, your mods, once in the folder: Enter steam, click "Mods", then click "Browse Mods" and on the bottom right there should be an install mods button. If you do it the way YOU did it, it should "Install" on its own once you enter that screen? Have you downloaded any mods from steam or just civfanatics?

There is an "install" button visible at the bottom-right of the mod browser whenever there's mods waiting to be installed, as thadian mentioned.

It's also worthwhile to check the Common Problems List, which details various problems with Civ 5 and how to avoid them.

The problem is that the game does not recognise the mod that I want. The latest version isn't available via the game's built-in mod search. I downloaded the latest version from the link I gave in the very first post. I deleted the cache folder, as instructed, and then copy-and-pasted the mod into the MOD directory.

I know that the MOD folder is the right one, because when I downloaded the older version via the game's built-in mod search, it put it into that folder when it had finished. However, when I opened the game and went to the browse mods menu, it recognised the mod downloaded in-game, but not the one I cut-and-pasted.

When I go to the browse mods menu, like you have in the screen shot above, the mod doesn't show up. The game doesn't recognise the mod. I followed the instructions word-for-word, but it doesn't work.

Note that in the screenshot above, you have v.7.2, which is the one I got from the game's built-in mod search. I could get that one to work. The mod I have is unofficial_patch_and_thals_balance__v_7_2_7b.civ5mod. This is the one I cut-and-paste, and the game can't see.

I don't want the older version of the mod because the latest changes are actually the only things that I'm really interested in modifying.

I've uploaded v7.4 to the mod browser, so you can get it through that method now. :)

I don't upload to the mod browser often because there's bugs and problems with the browser. Like for example... can only name it v7 or v8, not v7.2 or v7.3 or such. We're also limited to 100 uploads of a mod, and I've uploaded about 50 times in just one year... so I had to slow down or risk reaching a point where it's impossible to update the existing archive. :undecide:

You're an absolute star! Thank you very much.

I've downloaded, installed it, and activated it :)
