Cant get past early exploration era

Every time I try to play civilization and get past antiquity, I get an error or everyone just disconnects. The most last is early exploration era where turns take a really long time. Everyone then quits because the game is unplayable online after antiquity era at least. This happens every time but most people don't seem to mind or have to go because the game takes along time. There's a few people out here that do have time to play for that long.
