Can't launch Civ4 - OS X 10.5.6

Hello:

I just got Civ4 Universal on DVD.
Directions are to copy the Civ4 folder to my hard drive, then run the game.

I have tried copying the folder to my Applications folder; but upon running the game I always get an error 'Please insert original disc'.

Even if I have the dvd in it's drive, I get the same error.

If I try to launch from the DVD directly, I get an error about not having enough free space on local disc.

I've tried installing 1.74 patch. No difference.
I've tried installing to other directory on my HD; same problem.

Any advice?

Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by Civ IV Universal. However, I have the plain or "vanilla" Civ IV for Mac. You have to have the original Civ IV disc in the drive when you start up the game. It checks for that as its copy protection. OTOH, you cannot run the game from the disc. You have to copy the entire game to your hard drive and run it from there. Installing the 1.74 update is recommended. That is what I use. Perhaps something did not install correctly. You might try deleting your Civ IV installation and do it over. Before doing that, run the Mac OSX Disk Utilities and check permissions. Sometimes a messed up permission can do weird things.

Thanks for the help...

What I meant by Universal is just that it runs on intel and ppc.

OTOH

I copied the entire DVD to a .cdr image using Disc Utility.
I launched the game from the new disc image and that worked.
******ed - but it did work!

Now I don't need the DVD at all - which I never could get it to launch using the dvd anyway. Anyway, much nicer to not need the dvd in the drive.

Thanks

Hi, welcome :wavey:

I don't know if this is relevant for you - I assume your DVD is still nice and shiny and new.

My DVD is a bit scratched after lots of use, and is now very intermittent. It reached the stage where I had to try maybe 20 times before it would launch successfully. I improved it somewhat by cleaning the DVD and polishing the shiny side with Brasso to remove some scratches. It's still not very good, but I *can* get Civ4 to launch if I'm persistent.

Aspyr Support offered a replacement service, but I'd have to send the old one off to them and pay silly process for Intercontinantal postage both ways, so I'm making do with what I have, as it would be easier to buy a new copy.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, mine is actually brand new. ******ed policy to force continual use of the disc

Actually off topic now, since kalibans DVD is new -

Some months ago I had to start WL at least 4 or 5 times until it really worked - then I cleaned the CD in an ultrasonic cleaning device, and now it works pretty well - at least it did till the Quicktime update a few days ago

There are now two or three threads relating to this issue. I hope you are all aware of the latest post in the Quicktine 7.6 thread that indicates a full archive/restore of the latest OS X combo update may work.
