I'm sorry because I know other people are having this problem, but none of those answers have helped me yet. I'm trying to open Civ 4 (original) on my laptop with Vista OS and ATI Radeon Express 1100 on-board graphics.

I get the loading splash screen, then it gives up and tells me it can try o find out why the program crashed (it can't - Vista blames Firaxis)

I HAVE TRIED:
puting d3dx9_26.dll in the program dirctory
installing DX9
Visiting ATI and updating drives for Radeon 1100
Changing compatibility wizard to run program as XPSP2
running program as administrator

NONE of these have had any effect - the problem is still the same as it was the first time I clicked the shortcut.

Any help??

Go to the Civ IV site and download a patch for your Radeon Card, I have Vista and it operates perfectly.

I hate to be a loser, but is there a link? Because I've looked on the Civ 4 site and I have the most up to date game version (of course, it's a year old) but I don't see anything there about downloading update . .. .. .. . so my radeon works... out of curiosity do you KNOW this will work or are you just saying it because you didn't read that i had already tried a bunch of . .. .. .. .?

Hi everybody - I'm new on the site - since I had my problems with my CIV4 on my new VISTA Premium (32).
First I started the installation of CIV4, but Vista could'nt start.
I searched many possibilities, tryed a patch from the recommended "civfanatics" site, but it did'nt help at all !! Sorry for them...
Now what have I done ? I found a link on the german site : http://civilized.de/www/content/index.php?cat=civ4_downloads
There they talk about an Windows update for your graphic card (I've got an NVIDIA G-Force).
1) First of all, I've made an uninstall of CIV4;
2) now you have to choose the 32 or 64 Version (of your Vista) of the side
3) you click on the link - you go automatically at the winupdate site. Fallow the steps.
4) NOW (uff !!): Install CIV4 and it will run like NEVER BEFORE !!!! Woww !!
Hope I could help...
