For some unknown reason, my computer does not seem to recognise my dvd drive anymore. It was working last night fine. Any cd I put in and try to play (like Civ IV), it tells me to put the correct CD in.

I know this isn't a problem with Civ IV but I know this is a very active forum with lots of members. So can anyone help me?

It's possible your drive has given up the ghost. :(

There are a couple of things you could try before considering a replacement:

a) unplug PC from the wall and open up the case. Physically check that the data lead to the back of the drive is securely and fully plugged in. Check the other end that goes to the motherboard is also secure too. While you're in there just check that the power lead to the back of the drive is properly connected too (though that's probably OK if the tray is opening/closing). All this is just to discount the possibility of a loose physical connection somewhere.

b) go into Windows Device Manager and uninstall any and all DVD drives you find there. Re-start computer - Windows should automatically detect the drive again. You might get lucky - Windows might re-install it and see see the DVD drive once more (perhaps the software driver is corrupted or the registry settings are messed up). However, if there is no sign of 'new hardware' being detected and there is no DVD showing in Device Manager then this is most likely a further sign that your drive has had it. It happens *shrug*.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the post. I did a system restore instead because something buggered up the sound card. All is ok now:) :)

Am glad you sorted it so easily. :)
