Can't Run Civ V on my Mac

HI,

I am running MacBook Pro, 2.33 Ghz Intel core 2 Duo, with 3 GB 667 MHZ DDR@ SDRAM, running software 10.6.6, with 12GB of harddisk space available.

Why can't I run the Mac Civ V on my machine?

Do I need any patches?

Do I need any updates?

Or is my laptop just too old?

Please help I love this game and I can't get it to run on my computer.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd jump on board this one.

I have tried to launch the game, only to see a black screen which lasts for a couple of seconds then crashes.

I deleted the plist file, and that got me as far as the license agreement and the registration option. Whichever option I choose, I still get the black screen and crash.

And then the plist file has magically returned to my preferences folder.

This may not be the root of your problems, but I doubt if Aspyr would look at your crash log if you don't meet the minimum OS spec.

There are some specific OpenGL functions Aspyr uses in Civ V that are not available in 10.5.x. So that is definitely the first move, before even contacting Aspyr..

On nonblog.gameagent.com (and I think on support.aspyr.com as well), Aspyr has a list of the exact cards they support. For a while, 330m was not supported even though it was "better" than the supported 320m - simply because it hadn't been tested. A "better" card may still need a patch to get it working correctly.

My 4870 is not on that list, but it works fine, by the way.

That sounds like a newer card, as it has a higher number than HD 4850. So it's highly likely to work unless there are specific driver issues.

It was factory equipment in April 2009, so it's not 'new' ATI Radeon HD 4870. But, it's much like a 4850. 512 MB DDR5 on it.

The only reference I found to the X1600 on Aspyr's GameAgent was on a 2006 Quake game.

So yeah.. not likely to work.

You will not be able to play Civ V on an X1600. While cards that aren't on the supported list may work, we can't help with those.

Firsttimecaller: 10.5.8 is definitely the first problem there. Also, our testing has shown that a 9400M will technically run the game, but it will be extremely slow and thus, not supported.
