The most unthinkable thing happened to me. I played as the English and it was 2009 A.D. I had 1 elite modern armor garrison my city. Now this city was right at the border line with Germany now I was at war with them. I didn't think much aboutit because they were nearly destroyed early in the game (by me). So they were quite poor and tech backwards (mostly had warriors and spearman running around), they also had poor relations with the other civs. This is why I didn't think much about adding any extra units to that city at the time. Then a lone warrior approachs my city:lol: I think to myself that this must be a joke. Now this warrior is a regular. Let's see my fortified elite modern armor vs. one regular warrior. The AI must be dumb! But behold the warrior goes up to fight and WINS????? Now I think the AI must cheat!

How the Heck did this happen? I can't wait for that patch to come out this week so that it can fix this problem!

Hate to break it to ya, but the patch is not going to have any type of change to the combat system. It was originally slated to, but they dropped that part from this beta.

I for one, am thrilled that they dropped the combat changes from the beta, because it amplifies the differences in ALL fights, meaning that a 60% chance to win will now be about 80%, and it radically changes a lot of the dynamics of the game.

I think they should make it such that the "average of 4 combat rolls" should only take effect when there's a difference between the attack and defense values of say, 10 points (before modifications for terrain and such).

That would make it almost impossible for tanks to lose to spearmen or warriors, while still preserving the normal balance of the game the other 99.999% of the time.

What's everyone else think about my idea?

What? It's not going to be in the patch? Oh well but you right too. It would make the game to easy with an 80% chance of winning. I just hate it when I lose a good city to a lousy warrior!

Seems fair.

My major problem is with naval warfare. It offends me that galleys and caravels can be so troublesome to battleships. I know there is a sound logic behind it, but I just get really mad when I have to go in for repairs thanks to a very accurate arrow hit from a several thousand year old ship.

well, that is quite possibly the buggest upset i'vee ever seen/heard of. but i wouldn't worry to much, unless that warrior can control the weather, you'l have no trouble taking it back (how much damage did the warrior take by the way?)

EDIT: probably the best route to go there would be toattack it (win) and go back to defending the city

That's why you make a rule that you always put two soldiers in every city, just incase one loses.

And that is also why, when they you ask them to leave and declare war, you send over your entire army via railroad and kill the warrior before it can touch your city.

:p

It took 1hp! My modern armor just fell to the ankles of this warrior. I just find that extreamly upsetting when it takes a good number of powerful units to take control of a city in any scenario for me.

I just wanted to have some fun wiht the warrior and see what it would do, just to amuse the AI. I mean come on, do you think that a regular warrior could ever defeat an elite modern armor?

But don't worry I'm sent over 6 Modern Armor's to that city. 2 being elite and 4 being vetrean. I took control but 1 vetrean got killed in the process!

:rotfl: That's even worse than a spearman!

Hey I think I came To a conclusion. Maybe the warrior got underneath the cannon so it couldn't hit it and then the warrior used it's axe to hack away at the rubber tracks to the tank would become inmoble.

Hehe or threw a big rock into the turret, and *BOOM*!

But in real life, all "armor" divisions always have highly-trained soldiers with small arms to provide tactical support. Makes it so that enemies can't get near the tank without getting killed by the support soldiers, and can't kill the support soldiers in large enough amounts to stop them as long as the tanks are there. Only solution seems to be air support, tanks on your side, or anti-tank land mines / obstacles to bog them down with.

I remember in Civ 1, I lost a battleship to a diplomat. lol

My Carriers are constatly getting killed by Galleys. This is just the way it is.

I'm glad they took out the combat alterations from the new patch, because it sounded to me like it would make my method of war almost impossible (my method of war being the massed cavalry charge). Without random chance and units winning who are not supposed to, I would never be able to take a city. I think it's worth living with the AI's lopsided victories if it means I can have my own as well.

that new combat system was a horrible mistake. thank heavens its not in the patch. randomness is a must, and contrary to popular belief, it works properly now.

the new combat system should only apply to units of different age. or after you have obtain some special tech. Let say after you get smart weapons, or satellie or when u are attacking a warrior with medivial infantry.

Ok I must have slept too long or something because......

I assumed that there was going to be an attempt to address the 'Spearman Vs Tank' argument within this beta patch. In fact I know I read that....

* Modified combat calculations to make combat
appear less "streaky." Combat results are now
calculated multiple times before determining a
result. This should reduce spearman defeating
Tanks and other extremely frustrating combat
results.

So what has changed for the decision between Fraxis posting that intent and then now to remove that option..?

Forget that last question I have just skimmed through 19 pages of graphs and posts

Why would you let a hostile unit sit on one of your city squares? You should've attacked it to get rid of it. I would have been worried that it would have at least pillaged the square.

Lemme guess, no save huh? Or you have a save, but random seed was off...

thear is no logic to the combat in this game, its absalutly imposible for a bb to lsoe agins a gally, or a stupid speam man or warrior to beat a tank!

lets trhow one german tank division or morterized divison of ww2, no lets make it a polish divison agins some all the legions of rome.... who whold realy win?? i mean ethiopia, afghatnistan any nation of ww2 chold have conqerd rome in a day. (even an army from th 1400 up chold have probly done it with easy)

Not trying to be argumentative, but I think it could happen that a group of warriors take a mechanized armor. Its a stretch and probably not lined up on the field of battle. If the soldiers weren't ready for battle and were total unarmed and surprised there might be a 99% chance the warriors could win. Which is about the chance the warrior unit had of beating your armor in the game. It is annoying when it happens though. When your dealing with multiple thousands of random rolls, you have to be ready for a few wierd ones, thats what makes it random.
