Capturing treasure

I'm playing the age of discovery and it says you can capture treasure. My question is do the pirate ships have the ability to capture treasure that is being transported? Or is there use simply to sink it to prevent the enemy from returning it? It seems to me you should be able to capture it otherwise whats the point, ya know?

Oh..also lets say a ship can capture and theres 4 treasure being transported...if you sink the ship would you get one treasure or 4?

You get the treasure from the transport ship you sink with privateers. I think that you get all of them if there is several but I dont know what the treasure transport limit for privateers is.

can only privateers capture treasure or can any naval ship do this?

Privateers can and Elizabethean Seam Dogs (like Men-O-War) (English Unique Unit) can.
