Carrier Battle groups

The only reason I don't stack is that it drives me nuts with all the untis in one place. Well now I've changed some of my stratgy. I've kept the same basic deisgn, but just stack Battle ships and destroyers around my carrier to insure its safety I also place the transports and nuclear subs in the same tile to insure there safety and Cruisers and subs provide sub recon. So now I don't have to worry about a Nuke destroying my little project!!:p

I use battle groups too to come up with a build ratio for my navy. It is one carrier, 2 destroyers, 2 battleships, 1 aegis, and 2 tac. subs w/ nukes. I got 8 battlegroups right now, 6 of them against Persia!!!

i use +5 carriers with only 6 destroyers or battleships. even on emporer, the AI doesn't have a big navy. aegis are more important tho than destoyers

My sea battle group will consist of 1 Battleship and 1 Destroyer. So I can build a lot of this groups and it will provide enough flexibility and defense, for me.

I often choose to model my battlegroups after modern battlegroup design. Based on a 30 city scenario. Base each of the surface combat ships in front of each city. Therefore each city is to produce 2 Aircraft Carriers and 1 Transport. When possible each group is to have 6 Battleships (for pure defensive naval purposes)and 4 Aegis Cruisers (Radar Vision Range, Offshore bombardment capabilities at safe distance, anti-submarine), 2 Submarines *optional. In the first Aircraft Carrier station 4 Jet Fighters and in the second station 4 Stealth Fighters. The Jet Fighters would be used solely for air defense against enemy air attacks against units on the ground or against battlegroup itself. The Stealth Fighters will be used to launch airstrikes against enemy city infrastructure as well as to bypass enemy air defense including SAM batteries. In each Transport station 4 Marines (Modern Armor), 2 Radar Artillery (Related Artillery Units), 2 Workers *optional. Substitute Workers for more Modern Armor or Radar Artillery. Workers would be used to set up forts for units on the beachfront. Units forted on beachfront would receive air support from Carrier's Jet Fighters so units are relatively safe and can stay indefinitely until ready to attack. I recommend sending multiple battlegroups to region of conflict, possibly 4 or more. Rather than risk units to destruction, conduct a troop buildup campaign off of enemy shores. When in position make a sychronous landing and set up fort. Wait until everything is set up and then with one strike take out the enemy. Of course, during this time you will be conducting airstrikes as well, so enemy defenses should be weakening, if not you can keep your troops waiting until you feel you have damaged enemy infrastructure enough to keep your troops safe and are able to take a city. Offshore, your Aegis Cruisers can bombard the city at a safe distance if you so choose. I would be content with letting my Stealth Fighters do all the work. You could also simply carry out airstrikes and not invade at all. After significant destruction the enemy should start asking to sign a peace treaty. Only in nuclear scenarios do I invade. After conflict ends return battlegroups to original positions in front of their respective cities and await next conflict. I found this design very useful when fighting a 2 or more front war. This battlegroup design would shorten conflict lengths and will not risk so many troops. In a 30 city scenario you have 180 Battleships, 120 Aegis Cruisers, 120 Jet Fighters, 120 Stealth Fighter, 30 Transports, and 60 Aircraft Carriers.

There is one problem with that, if there are 30 cities in your country not all of them can produce naval units. I doubt your whole countrie would be costal cities. Sorry to affend you (if I did), but it's just my opinion, nobody listens to it, so you don't have to either (i'm just kidding)!!!!!

I like putting a weak unit near my stack. The computers will often pick off an ironclad or frigate with a battleship, thereby allowing me a advantageous combat situation during my turn.

for historically correct and such purposes, the USN has no battleships active as of the current date. for another real world application, carrier groups usually are escorted by guided missile cruisers (AEGIS) and destroyers. i don't think subs are escorted.. diesel subs are basically dead.. only real use is training exercises.. also, frigates (modern frigates) may escort carriers... and surprisingly, the carrier may take the lead in the group.. hehe..

(edit) lastly, destroyers are primarily used to destroy enemy ships, subs to be exact.. i give destroyers a radar/detect invisible attribute, same to the carriers (heli patrols)

for gosh sake's antisocialgeek, sixty carriers?!?! COME ON NOW!! really, it takes YEARS to produce ONE carrier, as well as billions of green paper.. I would rather limit it to about 15-20 carriers and about three times that cruisers, two times that destroyers, about 10-15 battleships, around 50-80 subs (diesel and nuclear), around 20-30 landing craft, four stealth fighters for around five or so of the carriers, three carriers with REGULAR [not stealth] bombers, it can be done, yes, and the remaining carriers with jet fighters. one other thing, i like to go into the editor and fix the bomber so it can move like a ground and sea unit combined, like in civ2, and i use it in the role of the e2c recon/early warning aircraft, so i can find the enemy fast and easily..

to me, the ideal fleet for one region would consist of...

2-4 carriers
3 aegis cruisers to go with each of those carriers
10-15 diesel subs to use against enemy shipping
5-10 nuclear subs for strategic missile deployment
2 destroyers to go with each carrier
1 destroyer to go with every five subs (both nuclear and diesel subs)
2 destroyers to go with each battleship
2-3 battleships
10-15 landing craft filled with various units, each craft contains eight of the same unit though (usually 1/4 have artillery, another 1/4 has heavy ground combatants like tanks, the remaining have six marines and two workers in each)

I usually change the carrier's carrying capacity, usually to 6-8 aircraft.
one of the three carriers has all stealth fighters except one bomber, as recon etc
the other one has all bombers as recon
the rest carry jet fighters + one bomber as recon

i also agree with those who believe privateers are useful, you can block their trade without having war declared on you, thats useful! and the cost is much, too much, i tone it down and have this grouping of eight ships:
5 privateers
2 subs
1 destroyer

hope i actually put something into this thread.

navies can be immensely time consuming. I found it easier to secure just one enemy city, then rebase all my bombers there from my homeland instead of building a bunch of carriers. I like having a couple carriers around for mobile bombing purposes, though. Also, i usually hurry an airport in my new city so i can airlift units directly to the enemy. I would rather battle it out on his land and take his cities than waste my time with naval ops.

i attack with 4 transport, 6 carrier, 12 battleship....
in 2 carrier group (3 carrier and 4 battleship per group),
the deployment group is shadow behind 1 of the carrier group.
the carrier provide: recon, burn inland improvement & bomb ship/troop... (2 turns will do)
the battleship and will then go into bombardment station....
after this is done, the transport can move in and land the 1 turn.
I seldom use marine, mainly mech inf and a few armor and a defensible spot.

the 2 range of the battleship is what I use to suppress them....
I don't expect my enemy to have a superior navy or submerge...
their naval forces are usually weak.....

if nuclear is in the scene, than I will go for a 1st strike....
destroyer and crusier will be used instead of battleship (production focus on nuke)
more transport and less carrier will be used (reduce cost)
the navy will than be spread out to capture many point together...
