I often choose to model my battlegroups after modern battlegroup design. Based on a 30 city scenario. Base each of the surface combat ships in front of each city. Therefore each city is to produce 2 Aircraft Carriers and 1 Transport. When possible each group is to have 6 Battleships (for pure defensive naval purposes)and 4 Aegis Cruisers (Radar Vision Range, Offshore bombardment capabilities at safe distance, anti-submarine), 2 Submarines *optional. In the first Aircraft Carrier station 4 Jet Fighters and in the second station 4 Stealth Fighters. The Jet Fighters would be used solely for air defense against enemy air attacks against units on the ground or against battlegroup itself. The Stealth Fighters will be used to launch airstrikes against enemy city infrastructure as well as to bypass enemy air defense including SAM batteries. In each Transport station 4 Marines (Modern Armor), 2 Radar Artillery (Related Artillery Units), 2 Workers *optional. Substitute Workers for more Modern Armor or Radar Artillery. Workers would be used to set up forts for units on the beachfront. Units forted on beachfront would receive air support from Carrier's Jet Fighters so units are relatively safe and can stay indefinitely until ready to attack. I recommend sending multiple battlegroups to region of conflict, possibly 4 or more. Rather than risk units to destruction, conduct a troop buildup campaign off of enemy shores. When in position make a sychronous landing and set up fort. Wait until everything is set up and then with one strike take out the enemy. Of course, during this time you will be conducting airstrikes as well, so enemy defenses should be weakening, if not you can keep your troops waiting until you feel you have damaged enemy infrastructure enough to keep your troops safe and are able to take a city. Offshore, your Aegis Cruisers can bombard the city at a safe distance if you so choose. I would be content with letting my Stealth Fighters do all the work. You could also simply carry out airstrikes and not invade at all. After significant destruction the enemy should start asking to sign a peace treaty. Only in nuclear scenarios do I invade. After conflict ends return battlegroups to original positions in front of their respective cities and await next conflict. I found this design very useful when fighting a 2 or more front war. This battlegroup design would shorten conflict lengths and will not risk so many troops. In a 30 city scenario you have 180 Battleships, 120 Aegis Cruisers, 120 Jet Fighters, 120 Stealth Fighter, 30 Transports, and 60 Aircraft Carriers.
