I grew up on my grandparents farm in Wisconsin, we raised and dined on our own chicken, but never named them. You don't want to get too personally involved with your food.
You have to name them. You chase them and call them things. Then, you eat their sweet, sweet meat. It can be fun for the whole family to know the name of your dinner.
Me: "Shirley is sure good, today."
Someone Else: "I know. I never thought the old bird had it in her! I thought all that running would ruin her. Thank god it didn't."
