I think I'm not too good at exploiting the Imperialistic trait... but also, I think the problem with Catherine is if I continuously warmonger, I should most likely raze and raze and raze... otherwise my economy won't be able to keep up with it.

I tried both REXing peacefully and REXing by rushing... either way, the economy seems hard to catch up in order to war and war all the time... or expand and expand...

Has anyone tried war of attrition using her? Like say, if the AI has got like 10 cities... then you raze all of their cities except the capital... or better still, take the capital and leave that opponent with one lousy city... and then ask for rewards for peace... and you keep doing this... that way you rake up GGs so you can build a really powerful unit in one of your cities... but the problem with that is, if you have a lot of neighbors... then most likely they will take those cities which you have razed anyway... so even if you don't expand, and one of your opponents don't expand... the others will...

Any tips?

If you have economic problems while REXing, it's a good thing to spam those cheap libraries and get some scientists online. Also works perfectly in a rush. Scientists are uncontestedly the most effective way to get beakers during the early game, wether we are talking bulbs, beaker output or the two combined. Capture the Mids while you go and you've got a game in the bag.

You already point out the main flaw of "war of attrition" stategies: it both keeps you occupied, and weakens a single opponent. The rest of the AIs will run away with the game in the meantime. A better thing to do is to get the war over with as quickly as possible and spam economy. The point of the war is economic growth, not vice versa. (I'd say there is a point at which the rules flip over and economy does become the point of war, but that's only the point at which a domination win is within a reasonable distance.)

hmm. that could be it. I think I tend to be very reluctant to touch those specialists unless I'm philosophical... definitely a great start at the beginning, philosophical or not..
