Caution: Don't rely on autosave

Civ 7 deletes all your current autosaves when you start a new game, and that seems to include simply transitioning to a new era. This can be dangerous for people who like to experiment. For example, I'm in the middle of a game and I want to find out more about Egypt's start bias. So I exit to main menu and start a few new games to see what the start is like. Now I want to return to my game. If I manually saved, I would be fine, but if I relied on the autosave, all of them would be gone.

TLDR; just use manual saves. I do this anyway, but I know some people could be caught by this given how great the autosave feature usually is in most TBS games.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy. I'd expect it to overwrite them, one at a time, but it actually goes the extra mile and just nukes them all. If you move to a new age, you will only have one autosave, from turn 1 of the new age.

It actually backs up the previous age to a folder called "prev." It's not accessible ingame though, you have to manually move them if you want to load those saves.

One thing I've noticed is relying on the continue continues from a save I was not expecting. Lately I just manually save before shutting down. I'm still not sure what continue is using, it may not be using autosaves.

P.S. what is the hot key for quicksave? I can't tell if my game is saving or not when hitting f5.

But there is no audio cue.

Yeah they really should fix this. And having the keys right next to each other, tsk tsk. Presumably I can change that in key bindings. I have a compact wireless keyboard, and it's easy to hit the wrong one in the dark of my room.

I have definitely confirmed it. Using the continue button after booting up the game loaded from my auto save and not my last manual save. Very annoying. I love this game, I have almost 70 hours into it, but this is stuff Civ 6 got right, but this game can't seem to do. It's like we are going backwards in technology where I have to manually load the game like the old days. Not a big deal, but it's annoying when I can't "trust" the continue feature.

I have also noticed that if you click "Continue" from the main menu, it will only load the most recent autosave, not a manual save even if that is more recent. Which makes the feature pretty useless.

Again, it seems like the programmers have never played a strategy game before. It's a little bit perplexing.

It shouldn't be perplexing at all by now: it's been obvious since at least Civ V that the programmers either have not played any games or play them with a logic that defies Human comprehension.

Civ VII is only the latest example of a game that repeats simple and obvious mistakes made in previous games or presents a new game missing very obvious positive features from previous games in the same series: like being able to save from where you are playing, or rename your cities, or having the GUI (Map) tell you which cities are connected to your other cities.

That they get such simple things wrong indicates an organization with, apparently, no institutional memory of its previous mistakes and therefore doomed to repeat them forever . . .

Oh that'd explain why I always seem to go back several turns when I continue a game, I was so confused why that was happening lol.
