Nobody won, that's all I can say. The rocket firing continued right after just some hours of the declaration of the cease fire, the kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit is still in the hands of Hamas (unless he's dead by now) and the Palaestinians are still in their self-made prison. Congratulations!
The simple fact that they still attack even when land is given back is enough not to trust them. And that is the problem. Israel is not going to give land back just so that they can move their rockets up even closer to Israel.
You won't trust them to stop attacking you if you give their land back and they won't stop attacking you till they get their land back. So where do we go from here? Nobody dares take the first step and nobody wins. So no solution and no peace. Ever.
Well the logic is to give them some of their land back, they stop firing and then you negotiate giving them the rest of their land back, Oh wait, Israel tried that in 2005 and then got attacked by rockets, and the palestinians elected a party who has vowed to wipe israel off the map. Maybe its somebody else's turn to try to take the first step?
We could play ping-pong all night like this and it wouldn't help. But just ask yourself one question. Who has been occupying whose land for the past 40 years? The answer to your last question is self-evident.

How long can Israel wait for it though? I mean, the recent problem being that the Israelis have a feeling that the tide is turning against them and time is running out. They're not in an actually bad situation right now, so odds aren't that things just staying the same will work in their favour.
The Palestinians otoh, well, too many of them don't have a lot to loose, have they?

And how did they come about getting such land? Oh yeah, that's right, Arab aggression.
Israel gave land back and they were attacked, so why are they going to continue giving land back?
Eygpt recognized Israel and stopped attacking, Israel gave land back and now they're at Peace. So, which side has the history of standing up to its end of the bargain?
Oh, and Hamas is firing rockets into Israel again after the ceasefire.
And the West Bank? What did Abbas and the PA get for years of peace, moderation and negotiation with Israel? No access for work in Israel, a wall enclosing areas of legal Palestinian land, no stop to illegal settlements, no reduction in the 284,000 settlers squatting on Palestinian land, daily arrests of PA people as supposed "militants", little or no permission for travel outside their towns and over 600 checkpoints and roadblocks harassing traffic throughout the West Bank. So what is their reward for peace? Why shouldn't they reject the PA stooges who have failed them? Why shouldn't they support resistance? What have they got to lose? Can you really blame them if they support Hamas instead?

First you say someone needs to take the first step, and then you justify reasons why the Palestinians shouldn't take the first step. Bias, much? Like you said, this could ping-pong all night.

I didn't say anyone shouldn't take the first step. Only that Palestinians on the West Bank might be justified in thinking their efforts to make peace with Israel have got them little in return. Don't you understand how they feel let down?
