Break My Heart
Hello and welcome everybody to the 2nd annual CFC Pick'em funtimes! If you're returning for your second go-'round then I'd like to warmly welcome you back and if this is your first time (out of two) then: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T GO ANYWHERE!!!
This is an Against-the-Spread pick'em league for the upcoming NFL season, and whether you're a hardcore football fan or just a casual watcher I encourage you all to participate. Why? Because it's very easy and, at least in my opinion, makes the season significantly more fun and watchable. It certainly gives you a reason to watch those otherwise godawful Jacksonville@Tampa Bay games we all know and love!
Before we get down to brass tacks, let's take a moment to look at last years standings, as well as congratulate last year's champion Darsnan (yes I know it's very belated, my bad):
Records listed as: (Win and Spread - Win, no spread - No points)
Pos | Name | Points | Record
1 | Darsnan | 287 | (124-39-92)
2 | North_King | 286 | (116-54-85)
3 | Owen Glyndwr | 286 | (118-50-88)
4 | Light Cleric | 280 | (118-44-94)
5 | Timsup2nothin | 272 | (108-56-91)
6 | KMRblue | 135 | (54-28-53)
7 | Azale | 94 | (41-12-40)
8 | classical_hero | 66 | (29-8-23)
9 | madviking | 21 | (9-3-8)
So how does this all work? It's all quite simple. On Tuesday of each week of the season I will post a list of the spreads for that week. It'll look something like this:
This game has a spread of -2.5, meaning the home team is favored by 2 and a half points. We here at CFC do things ever so slightly differently than most ATS pick'ems: in an ordinary ATS league you would take this spread and decide whether or not Washington covers this spread (that is - whether or not you think the visiting team's score will be 2.5 points lower than the home team's), but because this league's scoring is broken down into W/L and ATS, you as a participant in the pick'em league are now responsible for putting down one of three things, depending on what you think the outcome of the game is going to be. You can say Washington covers, which would mean that you think Washington is going to win by 3 points or more; you can say Washington does not cover, which means that you think Washington will win, but that they'll win by a margin of 2 points or fewer, or you can say Detroit wins outright, which means you think Detroit will win (duh).
It should look something like this:
You do this for all the games of a given week and that is all that is required of you. It can take as little as 5 minutes of your time. So don't give me none of that (I don't have time for this) crap. You're welcome to place your picks as soon as the spreads for the week are posted and change them as many times as you want over the course of the week, however, you must place your pick before kick-off of the game in question and at that point the pick is final. Last season many people posted their pick for the TNF game during the week and withheld their Sunday and MNF picks for Saturday or Sunday morning. This practice is perfectly fine as long as the picks are placed before kickoff.
Scoring
I'll record your picks into my master spreadsheet and track them over the course of the games. For any given game you can receive a maximum of 2 points: 1 point for predicting the correct winner of the game and 1 point for guessing the spread correctly. For scoring purposes a push (the margin matching the spread precisely) is considered a cover. That is, if the spread is -3, and you pick the team to cover and they win by exactly 3 points, you will be awarded 2 points in the scoring. I'll tabulate the scores and post an end-of-week round-up on Tuesday with the current standings as well as give the spreads for the next week.
So that's all guys! I'll update this thread with the first weeks' spreads on Monday, September 7th so stay tuned! Also if you want use one or two of these preseason weeks as some practice to make sure you understand everything let me know and we can do that too. At any rate I'll be around so let me know if you have any questions, and please, tell your friends! Pick'em leagues are always more fun with more people!
Good luck and happy picking!
