cfkane's LH gallery

No, I've been putting that on the backburner for now. I'm working on a LH that's taking longer than I thought. Not because of any technical difficulties, but just because I'm having such a hard time pinpointing what the guy is supposed to look like. He's a pretty obscure figure.

Who is he?

Chibinda Ilunga.

I've done several Google Image searches and found several variants of his appearance. I have the basics down, but since he's mostly represented in carved wood, I'm not sure what his headress is made of.

Hmm... I'm not sure.

wood?

yuck yuck yuck

From what I can gather from West African fashion the headdress is some sort of weave. Either it's made out of the same material as baskets or it's beads strung together tightly.

I already have the basic shape for it, I just need to get the right texture.

Give him some sort of sash or cloth that matches his headdress. It could also be used to fasten those currently-levitating weapons to his back. Perhaps two straps crossed across his chest with some sort of totem in the middle.

EDIT: Is it just me, or is his goatee off-center?

I like that you didn't make him a Mansa Musa clone, but perhaps he should have some sort of sash or some sort of upper-body clothes (elaborate necklace, etc)

But nice job!

If you add the horns from ragnars helm, it will make a good satyr

That was my first thought. He looks like a goat! And did you make the arrow the same way I made the spear for my Nzinga?

The problem with shirtless leaderheads is that they look to 'bland' as you said.

I agree with the sash, and perhaps a basic necklace.

What culture is this guy supposed to be from? I'd start there and use some of their traditional attire. Depending on where he is from a simple Hannibal sash (maybe reskinned to Zebra pelt, although the original is probably fine) could really spruce it up, you could also throw the necklace from logan on him as well, right there it should begin to look much better. I'd also change the color of his head-dress so it stands out from the rest of the LH more (his skin and weapons are generally the same color, so doing that, while a simple change, could make a big difference).

I'd also add some feathers or some type of decoration to his spear.

All good suggestions.

I've added some simple straps to the chest so the weapons don't "hover." I like the feathers on the spear idea, and for the headdress I'll probably just bring out the highlights to give it a deeper texture.

I've also started a second LH. It's coming along pretty quickly, so I'll probably release both of them together.

If it fits to the cultural and historic background of the leader, I'd simply give him some gold jewelry. Look at this guy, he has no shirt, but still doesn't look bland.

All good, but I'm a bit hesitant to give him jewelry. Chibinda Ilunga is known first and foremost as a hunter, and I'm trying to make this LH show that. Sure he may have some for ceremonial occasions, but I doubt that any good hunter would go out into the field wearing his bling.
