Challange #3-Lets get cultural!

For challange #2 click here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=183141

This is a strategy competition to see who can get the most culture in one city by 1600 AD.

Leader : Tokugawa
Build : Vanilla
Difficulty : Prince
Map : Continents
Size : Standard
Speed : Normal

Tokugawa starts with fishing and the wheel and his traits are aggressive and organized so lets put this to our advantage (in whatever way you chose) and create the most cultural city the world has ever seen. Play with the save posted here till 1600ad and report back your results here along with your save. Dont forget to put any detailed writeup of your game in a spoiler!

I tried to upload the starting position, but after trying out more than five different websites I gave up. Nothing seems to work for me, so please open the save and upload an image of the starting position if you know how to do it! Thank you.

So that is what the starts looks like ;). Feel free to post your initial thoughs here and discuss what strategies might work. Do not forget that the deadline is Sunday in a week.

Here's the start

Now if I could only remember how to maximize culture in a city !

Any expert advice ????

Some tips:

- Seeing all these flood plains you got yourself a real good GP-Farm.
- Grab some riligions, to build those +50% Culture buidlings.
- Essential Wonders: Parthenon, Sistine's, Notre Dame
- Nationals: Hermitage
- With those Wonders you got yourself a GA-farm, using great paintings to increase culture.

That are the most important basics I presume, i'll be trying this one out too, good luck everybody.

Wow, nice start! Thanks, Lynxx, the god in the machine loves ya apparently. ;)

Nice title too.

With that said, I'm going to... sleep. Yeah, won't even open the save, imagine that. :D But at 11:30PM it's a wee bit late, and I have work to do tomorrow. Good night/day everybody, and good luck to all!

Wow, if I counted correctly you're at +10 food in the capital without farming any of the 9 floodplains tiles. I'm thinking we're going to see some specialists in the capital. Maybe Caste System artists.

Unless you can tech sufficiently quickly to Nationalism and Liberalism, Caste System artists seem to be the way forward. Banking and Mercantilism would add another to the pot too...

Is anyone feeling generous enough to do the maths on the cutoff point for settling GAs rather than using them for culture bombs?

Coming up with an exact decision will depend on what culture multipliers you have in effect, what culture multipliers you expect to have in effect before the end of the game, at what point in the game the Great Artist is generated, etc. Here are some facts to consider though.

It's normal speed, so a great work will get you 4000 culture. A settled Great Artist gives 12 culture per turn. There are 230 turns (maybe +/- 1) to get to 1600AD.

With 150 turns left in the game, you need 26.67 culture per turn from your artist, or +150% culture, to make settling worthwhile.

With 100 turns left in the game, you need 40 culture per turn from your artist, or +250% culture, to make settling worthwhile.

With 50 turns left in the game, you need 80 culture per turn from your artist, or +600% culture, to make settling worthwhile.

With 25 turns left in the game, you need 160 culture per turn from your artist, or +1250% culture, to make settling worthwhile.

As far as I know, the best you can possibly do is +600% (7 * 50% from cathedrals, 50% from broadcast tower, 100% from The Hermitage, 100% from Free Speech). I'd be surprised if anyone can get a broadcast tower built by 1600AD on Prince. Realistically, I'm thinking all of those cases look like a real stretch. It seems like you're almost always going to be better off for this challenge to just make a great work with any Great Artists.

Stonehenge/Oracle in the capital sounds good as a start.

Problem is those are Great Prohpet Wonders, and we don't want to waste 4000 Culture do we?

School starts on tuesday after labor day, so i have to hurry up with my save(s), but i like to wait and see what the competition is putting forth(studies show those who go for their best via (increasing) goals suceed far greater than those who just see how far they can go)

Stonehenge/Oracle give GP points rather than GA points; as cabert pointed out you can burn GPs on religions(more cathedrals); Oracle and Stonehenge also accumulate culture in their own right.
Anyway, I guess there will be a number of strategies employed; it will be interesting to see which works best.

This should be interesting. Lots of floodplains causes health problems but sheep and crabs will counter that. What a start, now if only you were financial :p I can't compete in the game but I am looking forward to the results of the other players.

as a side note, as SH and oracle are (quite) cheap early wonder they have a non negligible chance of doubling there culture points (1000y is a lot less turns before 2000BC than after 1AD :))... typically the GA wonders will come a bit later... making less turns with x2 culture :) it may mean a loOOOT of culture... maybe as much as 1+ GA ...

SH : 8 base ... if sufficiently early : 20-30turns later (160-180 culture) it becomes a base 16cpt... more than a settled great GA
Oracle : 8 gpt : same math... 16 base gpt after 1000y...

other wonders : ND : late for doubling cpt, parthenon : expensive, sistine chapel may also be late... as taj mahal, all depend on which tech you are focusing...

and as said cabert : prophets are good :D : shrine to rise cultural slider without penalty and new religions...

So, just out of interest:mischief: , what city site features would be an improvement on this capital for the culturemegalopolis ?

amore inland city, with more cottageable tiles could be better
for high culture from artists, you need the sistin chapel, and it comes "late" = early artists aren't very rewarding

I'll probably try 2/3 different solutions :
1) work up the culture from here
2) find a "better" (hard !) spot and settle there
3) use capital as GP Farm and build a second city with forest (all those wonders) over cottageable tiles for culture monster

anyway you'll need at least 3 cities for cathedral and some more for national wonders, so it's not an OCC

Wow. Ok, I'm just going to try and survive until 1600AD. With the noble aim of getting a culture in the top half of the results table.

Expect tall tales from me of "a great looking score that got wiped away at 1500AD as I failed to keep the peace while pushing the culture waaaay too high!"

Great challenge, Lynxx. Congrats on the 119 shrine gold. I liked the squeezing of 4 extra cities in the last few turns. A simple but effective push for the line.

'Lust for Gold' made a great little read. Thanks Mice. What was challenge #1 called?

This is my kind of multiplayer action. No twitch gaming. No waiting for your opponent to arrive. Just a damn good challenge. Nice. :goodjob:
