Hello everyone. I'm currently working on winning a game where each city can only have 3 population. After this I'll try a one-city challenge (all on Deity). Another good example (not mine) was someone who converted the entire world to his religion, using only one city.

I wanted to brainstorm: what are some interesting or creative challenges you can do in the game? Post a challenge and I'll give it a try!

I saw this on a reddit challenge thread once. Play as Polynesia on Terra (or any map where you can get an area to yourself) and allow your original capital on the main continent to be captured, and any cities on that continent (you probably shouldn’t make any). Basically, get kicked off, colonize the new world and sail back with a vengeance in the distant future.

I have kind of a silly idea. You can only move or attack with your units (including settlers and workers) on even turns (unless the game forces you to move a new unit out of a city.) Workers can continue working on odd turns but can't take new orders.

Kind of a silly idea but: make sure that all your non-situational buildings across all cities except for the capital and puppets are built simultaneously.

"No wonder challenge"- Can't build or capture any world wonders. Must purposely avoid capturing cities with wonders (place a spy if unsure?).

"No civilian challenge"- Can't produce/buy any civilian units (workers, faith bought missionaries/inquisitors/GP, diplomats, settlers). Can capture workers, produce great people passively via GPP, and capture cities in order to expand.

"Best buddy challenge": In game setup, chose a civ for yourself, and another civ for player 2. Player 2 must win this game (and you must survive until they win). [This is not a team game, just a game where you don't try to win for yourself].
(Alternatively, you can try to make win the first civ you meet, or a civ chose trough any other method)

"Small World challenge": Play a game with far too many civs for the map size. For example, twice as much as recommended. (For a very weird game, you can try 43civs and 20cs on a standard sized map, but I would not recommend it).

A tough challenge might be getting a CS or multiple CS to capture up to X number of cities. Have CS empires scattered all over the world.

Always war: On the turn you meet a new civ, declare war, never make a peace treaty.

Funny enough, I've been doing this a lot recently already. The war weariness really, really, REALLY affects assigning specialists, so it's a challenge to be sure, even if you do manage to survive the hordes of enemy troops being thrown at you.

A very difficult setup I like to use is to use the barbarians evolved mod. Set it to nightmare mode so that barbarians completely ignore zone of control and any until they kill becomes a barbarian unit. Turn on raging barbarians. Use the frontier map so there's more space available on the map for barbarians to spawn. Choose AI that will go authority so that they not only have a chance to survive but even thrive. Enjoy the chaos. There is a point with that mod active that barbarian camps are basically producing 1 companion cavalry or 1 war elephant every turn. It can be insanely difficult.

Any suggestions for who civ #2 should be? Ideally it should be someone weak, who normally does poorly in AI hands.

You can try the Game of the Month's challenges, I think the diety ones (e.g. game 175, game180) are much more challenging compared to normal deity games.

I'd think Venice ai would be the most challenging to force feed a win.

Do you know what maps will have a new world area to expand to? My experience is that Terra has too much space.

Try a domination victory, without building or buying any units ( :c5gold: / :c5faith:). This was done on BNW/Deity some years ago, I read a photojournal on civforum.de. I don't know if it is still possible on VP.

mod a civ with 0 ua/ub/uu, and play with 4uc mod

I think he means no buying units with gold or faith, you can only build units with hammers or get CS gifts or whatever. In VP I don't think it would really be that hard.
