Change of Turn Speed Very Slow - Need Help Please

This is not a tech problem, per se.

I am playing on a 40 x 25 (which is 160 x 100 tiles; or 16,000 tiles), with 44 players, in Emperor level.

When I "end turn", the game takes about 60 to 70 seconds to change the turns.

Does anybody know how to speed this up?

I realize that the larger the map size, the slower it is. Also, more player equals longer change of turn speed.

I want to know if there are OTHER things I could change, besides the map size and player count, to speed up the change of turn speed.

I know the CPU speed is a factor. I am going to purchase a faster CPU.

I also turned down my graphics to the lowest possible detail level.

What I am asking is... are there specific coding in the .py files or Python files that causes this slowdown?

Or any other suggestions?

It is much appreciated.

44 civs on a big map is a lot to ask of any computer, but you might try:

1. Disable anything running in the background while you play. Anything in the system tray that uses memory or processor time will slow you down. (Windows gadgets, Media Center, quick launch programs, etc.)

2. Buy more memory. XP can run Civ just great on big maps with 2 GB RAM. Vista needs at least 3 GB to do it right, and 4 GB will work better.

3. Get a better graphics card or one with more memory.

4. A new CPU might help if it's a real speed increase. Civ is built for single core machines. That means that a dual or quad core CPU doesn't really change a whole lot (my engineer room mate says it improves things about 10 - 15%). The big change is clock speed. Moving from a 2 GHz single core Athlon to a 3 GHz Dual core improved things dramatically, but it was clock speed, not cores. I went to a 3 GHz quad, and it's no different than my dual core in terms of game speed. YMMV. Overclocking that quad improved things quite a bit. Again, speed is the key.

Hello Lemon Merchant.

Thank you for your tips.

Yes, the last note about the clock speed helps me a lot.

I'll overclock it and see what happens.

Yes, it is a mod.

It is the "XXL Mod" . You can search for it on goggle.com for "Civilization 4 XXL Map".

I actually, changed the mod a little to enlarge the XXL map, so that it is even bigger than what the MOD has.

It is fun because you have 44 different civs battling each other on a huge map. Near the modern age, there would be huge armies (Fun).

In any case, I found that the best thing to do is to overlock my CPU speed, and that produces the best result.

If I overclock it by 30%, then I get a 30% improvement in speed.
