I have played several games now and I always end up in these tacky "yellow" forests. I was hoping that the graphics would be much better than this (although I admit the water tiles are very cool looking).

Is there any straight forward and easy way to change the 2-dimensional yellow lackluster tree graphics to something more appealing?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooo.

Really long answer: You see, we can't add new art definitions for terrain, improvements, features, or resources. For whatever reason, the game engine just won't accept modified versions of these in mods. It's very, very annoying; the only way to change art definition files would be to replace the game's originals (and keep replacing them after every patch that updates them), which is just extremely sloppy.
You can switch definitions around, so that forests now looks like jungles and vice versa, but that's obviously not much of an improvement. So for now, you're pretty much stuck with the terrain as you see it.

I've seen this response before. Is that a copypasta? XD

Nah, just an old joke I dredge up from time to time. Reduce, reuse, recycle and all that.

Anyway, this is like most of the other questions people have when first coming on here: the answer is "no, you can't do that until we get the DLL, and no, we don't know when that'll be." Some days I'm just tempted to make that my .sig, to save even more time.

Thanks guys for the answers. At first I was grimacing and moaning, but the more I play (and man I have been putting in the time) I really enjoy the game. The tactics and strategy is so much different than in Civ IV and very refreshing at that. My initial experience with Civ 5 is like that I had with 4 in that I look at the clock and know its two hours later than I wanted to keep playing, but just need to do a few more turns. . . .

But the yellow trees are just one of the 4 (5?) regional varieties (I forgot what these were called in xml). Has anyone tried removing one of these? Doesn't seem like that would be too hard, but I haven't tried it.

But you can't add a coniferous forest, sadly. (And I wish that I could add watermills and windmills back as tile improvements.)

I did notice that there appears to be other kinds of forests, but oddly I always start in the same squalid yellow area :)

So much potential here for this game, I just hope they give the modders a bit of love this year. Not sure why they have seemingly made it so difficult to mod.
