Greetings,
I am holding off on diving into the new incarnation of Civ and wanted to see how patches and things get ironed out. How do folks like the idea of the hard reset 3 times? This game concept is throwing me off and keeping me from thinking its actually Civ. Do you all like it? Ive read it even stops wars in progress which seems kinda lame. Do we have modded supra large maps yet and will they be planned? I rebuilt my computer specifically for gaming. 64 gigs of memory and a nice AMD 9800X3D along with a 4070 Super. Do you like the animations and graphics? I've been part of this community for years and value your thoughts.

I've had a few issues with the game, trying to iron out what I'm supposed to be doing a lot of the time etc., but to be honest the reset thing isn't on the list. It's one of the more interesting parts actually. I don't really care for some of the ways you get to the mini victory conditions for every age; which I guess is a product of the ages, but I can live with it.

I like the new changes, including the reset. The ages bring a new planning element into the formula that was frankly getting a bit stale. Want to start that war? Better have a plan to get what you want in time for the age transition. And what might the crisis be? Better plan for that too.

I bought a new PC recently similar to your specs, and it runs everything on high quality with ease. The graphics are very good for a game like this and scrolling rapidly across the screen produces no lag or stuttering at all. Overall, I am really pleased with the game, but UI improvements are definitely needed.

I was in your position yesterday. I've only just been through one reset, but I like it so far. I'll update here if I change my mind.

I sort of understand the wailing and gnashing of teeth because it's so radically different. But on the other hand, I'm not finding anything bad about it yet (that can't be fixed). Only that it refreshes the game. The whole argument that "what I did in the last age feels pointless" does not ring true to me, yet. Everything you do in the previousn age grants you legacy points. And if you do things that did not lead to legacy points (or to some ageless bonus), then you were focused on the wrong thing.

What convinced me to buy the game was when I remembered Steam has a 2 hour return window. If the game were as bad as some are saying, I decided to gamble that I would tell within 2 hours.

Also, the UI is bad, but not unplayably so. Not even close. I guess I have to thank all the bad reviews and detractors, because they set my expectations very low. To be fair, Civ VI is my least favorite civ game, so my expectations were already tempered to begin with.

Obviously I can't speak to things like replayability or how interesting the civs and leaders are, because I would have to play a few games to decide on that. The legacy paths could feel like a railroad, that is my one concern right now. But I haven't yet tried ignoring them to see if they really are.

@Larsenex, good thread here on first impressions that is worth a read :)

As you would expect, the Ages do remain divisive, some people are struggling with it and I suspect some people will never be happy with this change. However, there is also a lot of positivity in this thread, and by far the biggest complaints at the moment are related either to the DLC model or the UI, not the mechanics of the game itself.

Oh yeah, the other thing I'm a little concerned about is that the legacy points system could end up feeling a bit too "RPGish" and disconnected from the larger empire building game. That will also probably take a few plays to discern.

It is not a hard reset. It is more of a soft reset imo. Yes, some things change but a lot stays the same. The map is the same. You basically pick up right where you left off, just with a new culture and some extra bonuses and continue the game. I thought I was not going to like it but I actually do like it a lot. Each Age has a distinct theme. The 3 Ages gives the game a stronger narrative feel of a beginning, middle and end. And it is the same game, just a shift in the focus and bonuses. It is still civ. All the civ elements are there: exploring, expanding your empire, war, diplomacy, building buidlings and wonders in your cities, trade, techs, civics etc...

This video describes the age transition in more detail. You can decide for yourself.

The age change needs to be explained better. It's not enough to say that the crisis changed the age. Many people think of crises as punishment. It has to be better than loading, which is shown by the hourglass.

The ages system is a pretty massive shift to the way the game plays. Personally, I think they nailed it. The best part of Civ games for me has always been the early game where you're making plans and there are lots of unknowns to react to. The worst part is the late game where you've already won but have to build 3 more spaceship things/spam apostles/spam rock bands/etc. The end of an age has maybe 20 turns where you narrowly focus on maximizing your points. It's a lot like trying to get a golden age in Civ 6, where you make long term v short term decisions to hit a goal

It doesn't feel like an RPG, but it does feel like a game. I've never been a role-playing Civ player, so I don't care that I can't be the British or that my leader isn't a kind or whatever. I've enjoyed learning about history through the game, and I think the greater diversity and representation, especially for the Exploration age, really hits that sweet spot for me. I love a Wikipedia rabbit hole after a Civ session.

I haven't had any issues with performance, and I find the UI less intuitive than Civ 6, but infinitely better than something like Age of Wonders or Humankind.

The reset tightens up the game when it can start to feel boring. I've not really gotten the same feeling that I'm used to getting from playing Civ 6 where the game just feels boring after the first 80 turns. I haven't ever had a situation where I wish an age hadn't ended in the middle of a war. At least in Antiquity on Deity, I've found that, if I leave wars that late into the age, I'm just not winning them regardless of when the reset kicks in. The only complaint I have with the reset is that it just happens without warning whenever the age progress hits 100% when I'm in the middle of finishing up a couple remaining tasks to complete as many legacy paths as I can. Graphics are great, although my laptop struggles a little (probably not an issue for you). Having said all that, I'd still generally recommend to anyone who's considering buying to wait for at least another couple months.

Just finished first full game a few minutes ago.

Overall I liked the game and I wanted to keep playing. I think that's the most important thing!

I like the overall change in feel compared to VI. In VI, more is always more. You're just trying to pile up more and more numbers until you get over the top. It can get stale.

VII is more like a bunch of side quests. Think of it like the City-State missions from VI, except much more elaborate, and completing them is the main point of the game. Sure, you need gold/science/culture/diplo points to facilitate completing these side quests, but completing the quests is the point now, not just piling up numbers for the sake of piling up numbers. It's a good change.

As for the eras reset, yeah, really jarring at first but with a little more play you not only get used to it but you also might come to learn that you can achieve end-of-era bonuses to avoid some of the negative effects.

I can't wait to play again!

I'm going to hold off until:

- There are more civs than 13 per age. That's tiny and would just result in seeing the same opponents which is boring.
- There are more and better leaders. Yeah I'm not a fan of the making of great people into great leaders thing. I want real historical leaders. It's a bit funny that where like Russia got an actual leader in Catherine the Great despite having lots of great people that could've led it but something like the Britain who could've had Victoria, Elizabeth heck even Anne or Mary if we really want to try new but instead gets Ada Lovelace? How random and inconsistent. Like why is Ada Lovelace going up against Catherine the Great? It doesn't make sense. Hopefully they start seeing some sense down the track.
- There are more and better maps. From what I've seen, they look small and the same which is boring.

I'm sure they're going to fix things like UI so I'm not going to complain about that especially as I don't have the game yet.

While the way you progress the trees is a bit different, the legacy points system ultimately feels like a variation on the Civ V culture trees.

Today I overtook Civ V playing time after 1 week lol

I broke down and bought it, even though it's full of crap that I loathe and detest, if not actively hate.

However, there is ONE thing it has that I do want to encourage.

A native linux version right out the gate.

I'm gonna ***** and complain about things in the game (and not so nicely), but, they got my money, just for that 1 thing.
