China evacuates millions as typhoon nears

People know how to evacuate on their own.

as New Orleans can attest to.

more generally, a person can evacuate on his own. A family can evacuate on their own. A small town can evacuate on their own. A large city, where tens of thousands of people are all taking to the streets at once - can they still evacuate?

there would have been an outcry, but some thousands more could have survived.
So you're really comfortable with the President seizing control of National Guard troops and having them forcibly relocate American citizens from an American city, just like that?

And conservatives are accused of being authoritarians. :crazyeye:

Yeah, with days warning, I don't see why not. They do it in Florida all the time.

in an emergency, things change. we'd have to be at least 95% certain that the areas we need to evacuate are going to get destroyed. It sets a terrible precedent, which is why I'm not completely comfortable with the idea, but it is more preferrable to mass, panicked evacuation

A crappy 5th world nation is capable of evacuation more than 1 million residents out of harms way and yet the Bush administration failed to empty the city of New Orleans. Can we have a more incompetent government?

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

there would have been an outcry, but some thousands more could have survived.

And how many people died exactly in New Orleans?

More so, what prevented the citizens of New Orleans, a people who:

-know their city lies next to the Gulf of Mexico, in a hole 15 ft. below sea level

-are fully aware of the danger from the hurricanes that sweep through the Gulf coast EVERY YEAR

-have a Television and are more than capable of saying "well hey now, that there storms a-headed this way!"

Tell me, what is it that prevents those people from using the above knowledge to deduce that it's a good idea to leave New Orleans?

Here's a hint: some people DID leave New Orleans.

If the Olympics weren't on next year, these people would've been forgotten and the typhoon would've been all hushed up.

Sometimes people don't fully understand the consequences of natural disasters, economic measures, etc. So if forcing people out of their homes in order to save their lives is necessary, I'd say go ahead and do it.

For one yeah, the US state and federal governments can force you evacuate. BUT they cannot use the military to do this as China does. Posse Comitatus act.

At least that was true until Homeland security made it null and void. I can't believe liberals would support this.

Yeah, with days warning, I don't see why not. They do it in Florida all the time.

The Floridian areas that evacuate are usually small beach towns. Occasionally when the big cities get hit, the devastation is enormous. The devastation is still enormous when hitting beach towns

Anyone accidentally misread the title as "China executes millions as typhoon nears?" Used to all those Chinese government authoritarian threads. But on topic, eye tricks aside, they seem to pull off something like this every year. I suppose they've gotten it down to an art form. Should other countries learn from this?

 we've all been conditioned to see something or the other like that

5th world nation? I wonder what that makes the USA considering that the Chinese economy will surpass the US in a few years in GDP.
