China hits back

Yay.....a good old tariff war....

This whole thing is stupid. It does start with the steel tariffs......(probably before then, but this one sticks out for me).

So much for free trade.

China won't be wise to start a tariff war. 45% of their GNP is dependent of exports, mainly to the US. They can get harmed big time.

On a related note, the WTO authorized Brazil, China and the EU to impose barriers on the US, because of the infamous steel tariffs.

Argh. This is all so stupid.

What is the root cause of this? Unions?

If I want to buy 8 million tons of clothes from China, I should damn well be able to!

I think the solution is to invade Poland

The events of the last few months show that the U.S. only supports free trade and the 'free flow of capital' when its suits the U.S. economy. Which is why so many countries in the developing world have been hesitant to give in to American arm twisting to open up their economies. They may not be 'first world' but they arent fools. Clinton would have handled these issues so much better than Bush. The Bushies seem to have gotten their ideas on economics from the 19th century.

I'd agree, except I can't imagine this helping our economy in the least. I'd say the motives are different.

Come next Nevember, Pennsylvania is a nice state to have on your side...

They definitely dont help the economy. What other motives for starting a global trade war do you think the Bush Admin has? I chalk it up to plain old stupidity on the Administrations part.

edit: ohhh, I see, he's wrecking the world economy to have Pennsylvania in his column:lol: That hadnt occured to me, but it wouldnt surprise me at all.

These bonehead moves will surely alienate economics majors, but they probably wield a lot less voting power than the labor unions.

But is steel really still that big in Penn.? I was under the impression that the bulk of the jobs in steel there evaporated a long time ago. Probably steel still has a major corporate presence in Penn, but most of the union jobs are long gone, no?

This whole country is filled with boneheads. Just another thing we did wrong because someone is acting like a big baby or doesn't posses the bazookas to do things right.

And before you say it, "they should all start thinking about swedish babes." ;)

Maybe we should use our women as tools to gain global domination? Why have I not thought of this before? :king:

The U.S. textile industry says it has lost more than 300,000 jobs since early 2001 and has blamed much of that on soaring imports from China, which has emerged as a global textile force since it joined the World Trade Organization in December 2001.

I'm sick and tired of being forced to buy cheaply made garbage products from China that are most likely the result of slave and child labor at the expense of American jobs. Being "forced" only because everywhere you go everything is made in China!!

They flood our market with their products, yet we are prevented from doing the same to their markets?? WTH??? Their economy is being used to build the world's largest offensive military, yet the doves in the world want to play nice and hope the Chinese won't be mean to us with their million+ man standing army.

I refuse to subscribe to this naive philosophy, and I absolutely refuse to place any other country's agenda over my own country's welfare.

When will people wake up and realize that China is only in it for themselves, so why shouldn't we protect ourselves?

I don't subscribe to the global trade policies that our politicians are selling us, the American citizens, out and undermining our economic power. We are getting the point where all we will be doing is selling each other Chinese goods and serving each other hamburgers.

American nationalism will return with a vengeance and bite all you globalists in the behind!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :D :p

Stupidity. Let the 3rd world do the resource-gatheirng (farming, mining, fibre-production), the 2nd world do the manufacturing, and the 1st world do the service (entertainment, education, engineering).

Duplication of efforts produces entirely unneccessary competition. EGAD!! Am I endorsing a Planned economy?

Guess I have to go and defend Poland....

Back on topic, I do think the goal was to earn votes with the steel workers. The workers haven't realized how this could hurt their own trade if no one wants to buy American steel anymore, they wanted increased wages now, just like Bush wants votes now. Nobody's looking long-term.

That's exactly why a lot of people in the third-world hates you americans, and fisrt-worlders in general. Statements like this give the impression that you want to maintain the current status quo: that is, keep half of the world in absolute misery.

Let everyone produce whatever thay want.
