Given that some Crises cause you to lose towns what if there was a Legacy option that let you maintain all your Distant Land territories but your mainland territories get broken up into IP's and some go to your neighbors. This option would allow you to become America as the Normans or Mexico as Spain for Example. Alongside this you'd earn celebration points easier. You could also make it so you don't gain access to last ages traditions but your modern age ones are even stronger, to represent you trying to distance yourself from the colonial period and forge your own identity.
Of course this would be an option only if you don't get an Economic golden age which works as an in universe mechanic because you could justify your colonies were so well managed that there was never a revolt.
