In the year 4000 BC, The Other Daniel (no, not ~that~ one) gathered the surrounding tribes under his banner and shared with them the Vision. No more would the people wander aimlessly, in petty squabbles, stealing eachother's livestock and women, and quarrelling over land. They would stand united against the darkness of ignorance that had enveloped the land.

The settlement - for it had only a few dozen people as yet - was settled by the coast, in a land fertile and blessed. They called their city "Amsterdam", and planned to model other settlements on it. The people would grow in numbers in time, but as yet, their mettle was untested. they sent out their best fighting men, to explore the land and tame the surrounding wilderness.

The surrounding forests seemed to taunt them, hiding what lay beyond. They were, in their way, symbolic of the raw chaos that they would push back, to make this land their own.

By the rivers of Babylon where we sat down
Yeah, we wept when we remembered Zion
By the rivers of Babylon where we sat down
Yeah, we wept when we remembered Zion

Then the wicked carried us away in captivity
Requiring from us a song
Now how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land
Then the wicked carried us away in captivity
Requiring from us a song
Now how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land

Let the words of our mouths
And the meditation of our hearts
Be acceptable in thy sight be tonight
Let the words of our mouths
And the meditation of our hearts
Be acceptable in thy sight be tonight

By the rivers of Babylon where we sat down
Yeah, we wept when we remembered Zion
By the rivers of Babylon where we sat down
There we wept when we remembered Zion

By the rivers of Babylon (prophets of Babylon)
Where we sat down (you gotta sing the song)
Yeah, we wept (sing a song of love)
When we remembered Zion

By the rivers of Babylon (prophets of Babylon)
Where we sat down (you hear the people cry)
There he wept (they need the power)
When he remembered Zion (ooh, got the power)

By the rivers of Babylon where we sat down
Yeah. there we wept....

......and then we settled our first city

The small band of warriors made their way through the forests, up hills and down dales. As they scaled hills they saw the land stretching in panorama around them; back home to Amsterdam where their heart strings pulled them back to their wives families; in another direction the blue haze on the horizon hinted at the ocean; in another the heat haze of a vast expanse of desert. Travellers' tales told of a small settlement across this vast expanse of sand, so the men made preparations for their 40 year journey.

A true king has taken power

"Now the time of small settlements is over. It is time for us Babylonian to rise to the limit of our potential.

We shall rule the earth for many miles around.
We will fight barbarians.
We will rule the coastal waters around.
We will discover many great things.
We shall have a great army.
We shall have plentifull lands and great herds.
We shall build wonders.

My fellow Babylonians, follow me, Nabu-kudurri-usur, and we will do many great things."

Inscription at the Ishtar Gate in Babylon

Nabu-kudurri-usur, King of Babylon, the faithful prince appointed by the will of Marduk,
the highest of princely princes, beloved of Nabu, of prudent counsel,
who has learned to embrace wisdom, who fathomed their divine being and reveres their majesty,
the untiring governor, who always takes to heart the care of the cult of Esagila and Ezida
and is constantly concerned with the well-being of Babylon and Borsippa,
the wise, the humble, the caretaker of Esagila and Ezida,
the firstborn son of Nabopolassar.

Both gate entrances of Imgur-Ellil and Nemetti-Ellil —following the filling of the street from Babylon—had become increasingly lower.
Therefore, I pulled down these gates and laid their foundations at the water-table with asphalt and bricks
and had them made of bricks with blue stone on which wonderful bulls and dragons were depicted.
I covered their roofs by laying majestic cedars length-wise over them. I hung doors of cedar adorned with bronze at all the gate openings.
I placed wild bulls and ferocious dragons in the gateways and thus adorned them with luxurious splendor so that people might gaze on them in wonder

I let the temple of Esiskursiskur (the highest festival house of Markduk, the Lord of the Gods—a place of joy and celebration for the major and minor gods) be built
firm like a mountain in the precinct of Babylon of asphalt and fired bricks.

The Netherlands - Episode 3

The band of warriors found the villagers to be friendly, welcoming them into their midst and teaching them - of different lands far away, of other villages, and of the use of tools, which they brought back to their people.

This inspired other men to go out and push back the darkness on the maps, seeking knowledge of new lands and new peoples. And they found many settlements, but it seemed that all those that were found were primitives, and posed no real threat to their way of life.

Thus the people enjoyed peace, and the bounty of the land.

Bad omen sighted

Mount Babel has erupted.

High priest Barmuk Baduk has explained these sights:

"The gods must be angry with us.
We have been confined in our part of the world by the sea, the desert, the jungle and the Portuguese tribe.
This is not satisfactory to our gods.
We must strive for greatness."

Babylonian warriors have been sent out to appease the gods.

Out of the forest a lone Babylonian warrior emerges..

He is amazed by what he sees..
He never saw such a big city, so many houses..

Quickly he warns the entire Marduk Forest Guard and the Ancients, all the heroic warriors the young Babylonian civilization can muster..

They head for the city with the knowledge that the only way the Babylonian civilization can survive is catch such a glorious civilization off guard..

A new panel is added to the Ishtar Gate

Following the much needed conquest of Lisboa a new panel has been added to the glorious entrance of our beloved city of Babylon.
It depicts the entrance of the elite Marduk Forest Guard into Lisboa.

Their rapid progress through the Lisboan forest surprised the defenders. The moment they entered the city the defenders saw all resistance is futile.
Through this immense feat the fall of Lisboa was accomplished without any losses on both sides.

Our beloved king said:
"I welcome our new brothers into my realm. This city will now be known as Uruk.
Work hard, be productive and you'll receive all the privileges, rights and obligations citizens of Babylon have.
Marduk be praised."

Hmm.

Everyone loves magical Trevor though!

I think I founded Hinduism this turn.

Behold! The Dutch people have found a land to the north, journeying many years to a region far inland, and have settled the town of Utrecht in a fertile valley, far from the coast unlike their coastal forbears. Let God be praised!

Travellers from other lands have arrived, bringing a glimpse of nations far beyond, with rumours of wars reaching the ears of the peace loving Dutch. Their leaders, the Other Daniel, vows to protect his people, and the people rejoice!

(repost from org thread)

Our warrior band 'The Ancients' has been brutally massacred in an ambush near the Northern Mountains.

After that the Aztec barbarians have offered peace.
We say no peace without retribution or compensation.

Marduk Forest Guard takes revenge

After Babylonian troops had been ambushed, while at peace with the Aztecs, a war of retribution had started.
Now, a crucial moment has come in this war.

In a battle of manuevre, the Marduk Forest Guard has outwitted it's second civilization.
Whilst the evil Aztecs thought they had surrounded them, the Forrest Guard moved swiftly through the dense forrest and managed to capture the Aztec capital of HOME.

Quickly gold was looted and the defense is prepared.

The death of our brothers is revenged.

(OOC: Yes, some warriors can move 2 hexes)

After the daring raid on Home the Marduk Forest Guard managed to escape unharmed, while being surrounded by 4 separate warrior bands.

Sadly Home had to be left behind for the Aztecs.
Now they have been joined by their comrades, a few miles south of Home.

Still the Aztec campaign is reaping good results.
The enemy has been severely hampered and a clear message is sent towards these Aztec peoples who attacked so mercilessly without any provocation.

The Aztec war is turning into a grueling battle of attrition.
No mercy is asked for and given.. It is clear these Aztecs are good warriors.

At this moment the Aztecs are turning their slaves into archers.
A sudden draft robbed the Marduk Forest Guard of a chance to capture their third city.

We sure hope these armed slaves will rise against their masters...
