Hans Bonte (socialist party) complains: how citibank robbed 4000 belgians of their savings.
'Citibank is a criminal organisation.'

summary: if you read the files on the OCMW(organisation for unemployed, poor, immigrants) you notice that this American bank trap consumers for the rest of their life. A credit card of Citibank is a one-way ticket to misery.
He writes an article on it, controverse comes up, and before you know it, you are the gravedigger of the second largest bank in the world.

It happened to Hans Bonte, parlementarian and chairman of the OCMW in Vilvoorde, and by accident he became the voice for the most vulnerable poeple in society, thansk to their credit card are thrown in a bottomless pit of greater debt and unpayable debts. In june this year citibank was judged for these practices.

and now there is a new file, two fists thick, with mails and letters of poeple at citibank who bought under influence of lies bought a stock of lehman brothers. the stockholders were seduced by citibank by high promises of profit and 100 procent capital guarantee, but they will never see their money.

The bank washes it's hands in innocence and refuses to pay back a single dime, so Bonte sighs: Citibank is a criminal organisation, how do you else call a company that violates the law each day?

Since 2007 citibank has brought 14 lehman brothers product to the man, products with big names as double opportunity note which was sold as an savings account. But they weren't savings, they were risky stocks. Behind the fancy etikets there was a bunch of stock of Lehman.
Véél Belgische banken hebben Lehman-producten verhandeld. Alleen: Citibank is daarmee blijven doorgaan láng nadat Lehman in problemen was gekomen.
a lot of belgian banks sold lehman products, only citibank continued after lehman got into trouble. Deatsche bank, swiss life and ethies quickly understoof they should stop with it. But citibank only accelerated the sells.

good informed stock oberservers tipped lehman as a victim of the crisis.

in march it was clear, the company would restructure, and they were searching for 25 billion dollars. Citigroup invested a lot in lehman, in other words, if lehman goes broke, citibank is in trouble, thats why they were searching for cash, pure poker becuase no-one knew if lehman would make it. Citibank belgium got te order from HQ to get X billion with lehman-stocks.

I received mails of clients who were pressured over phone to agree, and that the director of the office came at evening to sign. often documents got antedated, a practice not uncommon wiht citibank.
a lot of poeple bite it. It's understandable, it was a '100% safe' investment, with capital garantee and 7% intrest in two years, that's very tempting.

citibank didn't take into account with european law, which says that you need to inform theclient about any risks and technical details.
they whiped their feet with the guideline. they said, sign here, the prospectus and technical fiches will follow. Often clients didn't even know it was lehman who gave out this. in the best case, it was in the little letters after the transaction, or on a commercial folder behind an asterix. On the product itself it was never mentioned.

(
(gets big file)
this is the official code of conduct of citybank employees, a manuel to selling products. what is able, what should and what shouldn't. It's an official document, controlled by the banking commission. I got this example from an insider. What is so interesting are the notes in the marges, those are the unofficial guidelines, "we should do it like this law bu we will do it like that", those notes never got under the view of the commission.

Bonte «Integendeel.
Did citibank intervene when it ecame clear that kehman would be nacrupt?

absolutely not. A man explained me he already went in june to his local citiank office becuase he heard alarming notes on the deplorable situation of lehman.
He wanted his money back, but the bank director send him home he shouldn't worry. at friday 15 september he went back, the director said, if you don't need your money today, i'd wait a while.

well, that guy is still waiting, the monday afterward lehman asked for chapter 11 and all money was frozen. This is unimaginable.

Yes, of course. But you know that I consider every bank to be a criminal organisation.

Yes, of course. But you know that I consider every bank to be a criminal organisation.

almost every bank, i remember one local bank that works with a system that sound great and ethical.

but yeah, most banks ditched the last part of any dignity and went anglo-saxon greedy, instead of just greedy.

Ex-premier :p

That said, these people were stupid to put their life savings into something without reading the contract first, but I still hope they manage to sue Citibank succesfully.

Citibank has engaged in shady practices with me. Charging the multiple fees for the same thing, lowing my credit protection right after I make a purchase, etc.

Post an English translation.

Summary? - kinda useless for most people as it is

Is there an English version of this article? I'd like to see that please.

an interesting article in last week's humo, i read the full article. Dutch-speaking poeple have a bi of an advantage in this thread, but if there would ever be an english article on the practices of citibank, be kind enough to post it here.

most of you are aware that citibank has done practices which were unethical and against the law.

would you agree that it is time to dismantle citibank or at least sue them for all the harm they have done as criminal organisation?

How about translating the article for us, then?

Citibank was selling investments in Lehmann brothers as "safe investments" long after it was clear that Lehmann brothers might well not survive the crisis. Of course, they didn't tell the customers they were investing in Lehmann, and they did everything to hide that the money was going to Lehmann. Thy broke nearly every rule and regulation on the subject of investing doing this.

Why did they do this? Because they had invested in Lehmann themselves, and hoped this way Lehmann might survive long enough to pay back it's debts to Citibank.

edit: That's a rough summary of course

Hans Bonte (SP.A) klaagt aan: hoe Citibank 4.000 Belgen van hun spaargeld beroofde

That's the worst "Chatspeak" I've ever seen.
