The National Religious Organization, which shall be referred to as the NRO, will have the goal of founding and propagating a home-based religion. The NRO will be founded under the following simple principles:

1. These founding principles are the official platform of the NRO and do not necessarily represent the views of every member.

2. No religion shall be favored due to its actual dogma, only location on the tech tree and wether or not it comes with a free missionary.

3. The goals of the organization should be for the benefit of the democracy, therefore, since we believe having a religious holy city that matches one's own religion and converting other civilizations to one's own religion is beneficial, we will not push for unreasonable requests that would hurt the non-religious aspects of our country.

4. Once a Holy City is founded within our lands, that is the official religion that the NRO will adopt and strive to propagate.

5. The NRO is to be a purely democratic citizen group and no leader or group of leaders will make changes to the principles.

6. The principles of the NRO may not be edited until there are at least 5 members of the organization.

7. To edit the principles, a member must post all requested changes and get 1/2 (rounded up) of the members to support the call for editing. If the required number of members support the call, a vote will be placed on wether or not to bring the changes into effect, and if 2/3 of the NRO body vote for the changes they will be put into place and these principles will be changed as suggested.

8. Anyone who desires home religion may join the NRO by posting a simple message stating their membership and adding NRO to their signature.

9. Members who have not been heard from for 2 weeks will be removed in order to prevent sleepers from blocking votes, but anyone who times out may simply rejoin upon return (removal is based on 2 weeks exactly from last post.)

The National Religious Organization is looking to build membership before the game begins in order to prepare and aim for an early Holy City, please feel free to join, and early is better.

As the designer of the original NRO I of course will join as its first new member and look to be surrounded by similar thinking individuals so that we can begin to work towards our common goals.

I'll be the first (okay, second technically, but still) to join!

I would like to join this religious movement, and i shall make generous donations to the religious group.

I would also like to join this organization!

20 minutes, 4 members. I'm glad so many people can agree that a state religion is a good idea and something to cooperate and push for. =]

I'll join. I agree that a state religion is a very good idea for this game, but what happen if we get two holy cities? Should we also spread that religion, not to the same extent as the first since we don't want other Civs going away from our first (state) religion, but enough to cause disorder?

I'll join, this looks interesting. May i suggest you edit in a "Official" Members List into the first post, so we know who's a member without scrolling through the thread.

I can't believe I would actually ever agree that a state religion is a good thing, but after having read a lot on the boards, I think I will join as it seems that a state religion can have some very good benefits. Of course, I may have to withdraw my membership if, after receiving my copy (Amazon is so sllllloooooow), I decide not having a state religion is better.

I also second AWolf's suggestion that we decide how to handle more than one religion within our civ. I think (again, as of right now) that we should probably promote all religions...might as well be able to reap all the potential bonuses of having them. I do think though that if the Holy City of another said religion is subjugated by an enemy Civ (read: any other Civ?) we should seek to free said Holy City (if for no other reason than we get to "control" more religious holy cities…not to mention more gold).

From what I've played so far have a state religion is good in that it gives up more happiness and gold in the cities with your state religion. Late in the game a civic (forgotten the name at the moment) makes diversity a very good thing but that is later in the game.

With two state religions I did not put that in the principles, I titled it with the goal of one sole religion which of course could be changed later in the game for freedom of religion. The goals are ours and transient as to the needs of the time period. Early in the game I only really want one religion in our land (my oppinion, dont mistake me for having any more power then anybody else) but later in the game it could be extremely beneficial to have many. We will adjust as the group decides. But the sole purpose of the organization is to push the benfits of religion, whatever they may be at the time, as a priority. As the principles stand, the wording states that the first founded religion is THE religion that will be adopted automatically, so unless we edit that only the first religion will be considered valid. But so many aspects of this will be determined DURING the game, there are so many variables where one option could be better then another that we will need to make most of these determinations later. For now we just want an organization to push religion early, I personally have found that the sooner you start your religion the greater the benefit, especially with converting others which REALLY helps foreign relations.

I completely agree! As a devout Won Buddhist, I could only imagine if America adopted christianity as a state religion. But for the games purposes a state religion has no negative effects other then a low upkeep and a large amount of positive benefits. You get LOS in all foreign cities with our religion (doesnt even have to be other countries official religion, so we can use it to keep tabs on our enemies) You get culture in your cities with it plus bonuses from the religions religious buildings. In addition you get really good relations with countries that have your religion which prevents war and supports fair trade relations. The only negative things are that you have like a 1gold upkeep cost(early in game) and civs with different official religions will dislike you. But this will happen anyway, as if the computer civs are left to themselves they will become very divided and adopt all different religions. Therefore if you want anyone to get along, you kind of have to force it yourself by spreading your religion to religionless civs early on and build a religious block of allies and trading partners.

sign me up for the jihad:) :)

Only if we have the Holy City not if it's just our state religion, this is a good reason to have all the holy cities.
