What if the green dot was 1SW of where it is? Sharing the capital's crops in the short term (but the capital can do some mining instead), and able to bring the cows and deer in the mid-term.
The big advantage I see to the southern city, versus another city which overlaps with the capital is that the southern city has access to that wheat. The other resources we're talking about the city being able to work (deer, cows, etc) can not currently be improved with our technology. If we want to settle our second city in another location, I think it would also require us to delay BW in order to get necessary worker techs. The benefit of giving us access to chops and slave rushing earlier can be considered an added bonus to the southern city because it won't force that delay.
I look south and I see the fur. And the gold looks better than the fur. If we went south I like off the river much more because of the mines; if we want an ancient-age Indira helper then give it the production - on the river it's a cottage city albeit a good one, though a tundra cottage city for city #2.
If we have alot of room around us I think gold is the most powerful play, it's only when were cramped that south is better. I guess I just don't have much faith in out-cottaging people in multiplayer, at least right off the bat.
This is a little off topic, but speaking of gold, why dont we take advantage of our FIN trait and work the lake for 3 when we are teching BW. Maybe this has been discussed already and I missed it...
Anyway, I understand the point of wanting to work the tile from Indira, but I havent seen any discussion of cities sites that include that same tile but DONT include useless tundra. Either way, I support the conclusions reached by those doing the testing

Couple of random notes about our settlement planning now that we've met RB. Distance between our capitals is 18 moves. I think it is safe to assume that this is about typical near neighbour distance in this map. Now, the gold hill is 7 moves from our capital making potentially just a little less than halfway to a neighbouring civilization. Since the area is so delicious to settle both from east and west, it is quite possible that we will end up in a settler race with this city. IMO, the third city should go here and we'd better send a warrior forward ASAP to spot any scouts or settlers in the area. Fourth city probably should be towards RB.
Use Red Dot as a Warrior / Worker pump as discussed, chop out a quick monument for Yellow Dot to get the Gold in range while teching Hunting and AH for all those resources, then depending on how things develop with RB, go for a Pink Dot.
I think we should focus on the good land to the E, not the bad land to the W. There'll be another nation in that direction.
Not only do we have some sort of an agreement with RB (even if only a NAP so far though we're looking to expand it), but they're also a little further behind on city settling -- and if they're keen to use their early UU they won't be REXing as fast in my opinion.
