City and wonder placement help

    I have trouble with placing cities. I have trouble figuring out where a good production city should go, where I should place my national wonders (I'm pretty good about oxford and wallstreet), where to place my filler cities, etc. Any advice or good articles I should read about city placement, criteria for various types of cities, etc?

    Placement varies with need.
    Early on I like a single food source with three grassland hills.
    At pop 4 you have a city with 10 production.
    If you're cultural or have built stonehenge you can span the whole BFC.
    If not, settle next to any convenient food.
    Or ... grow one city then settle nearby and recycle its food to grow the new city.
    There are so many ways ... you really need to play the map.

    For a production city you want some hills and enough food resources to sustain a good amount of production. Sometimes late game you can work a bunch of workshops instead of farms for that extra boost once you get a couple techs that give + hammers to workshops. ideally a resource on a hill will help even more.

    National epic should go in your GP farm ideally (city with lots of food and farms and running tonnes of specialists) and Heroic epic should go in your production city to pump units.


    As for generic city placement i usually like a bunch of green with some river for my GP farms. Ideally a hill or two for SOME hammer production although whipping the heck out of the city can counter that or a couple of workshops can help too. But mainly you want 2-3 good food resources PLUS green riverside tiles. that is an ideal situation though. Even a coastal city on a river with 2 sea resources (ideally fish) plus some green river tiles will work as well.

    For filler cities they are just that. Usually i will make filler cities near my capital commerce cities so they can overlap with the capital to get those cottages up to towns faster. If they are far away or near an enemy i plan to conquer i will put more emphasis on production so they can pump units.

    Of course you need to play the map. Ihad some scenarios where the only production city i could get was a bunch of workshops and a hill or two. I switched to caste and pushed for techs that give more hamemrs for workshops. Eventually i mixed in some watermills to keep the growth up.
