I thought I'd drop some ideas for a Civ1-oriented banner, based on the in-game newspaper headlines:

I could well imagine a whole theme based on the Civ1 original pixel-graphics and fonts, but I'm not sure it would actually be readable/practical...

I didn't care about the size/dimensions, but everything should be adjustable quite easily.

The earth is round?... No way!

I like the second one because the noticeable lighter/darker effects on the Civilization Fanatics letters give it a three dimensional quality. Can we please have a Civ I theme with rotating bits of news?

This is what I found in KING.TXT in my Civ folder:

*NEWSA
Lions Defeat Gladiators 7-0!

*NEWSB
Mayor fiddles as city burns!

*NEWSC
Earth is round Columbus claims!

*NEWSD
Latest Olympic Games results!

*NEWSE
Attila sorry for misunderstanding.

*NEWSF
Cleopatra's beauty secrets! Section B.

*NEWSG
Iliad tops bestseller list, see BOOKS.

*NEWSH
Crusade ends in disaster, Press blamed.

*NEWSI
Renaissance imminent, scholars claim.

*NEWSJ
We Love King? Latest poll results.

*NEWSK
Rain, Rain, more Rain! Noah predicts.

*NEWSL
Great Wall damaged, Vandals suspected.

*NEWSM
Nostradamus fortells future: Trouble ahead!

*NEWSN
Marie Antionette's diet secret: Cake!

Currently using Ancient CFC, the header on Civ V revised was a tad to high for my tastes otherwise it was very good.

@ OP

I'll throw my vote to the second image.

No idea about that, it really depends on what the theme functionality supports... It could be completely dynamic (if the theme supports banner URLs, and a PHP can be coded and loaded to generate the pics), or pseudo-dynamic (pre-generate a bunch of static banners, and let the theme randomly select one of them), or not dynamic at all (a single, static banner).

Hrmm I think the easiest way would be a static banner that updates just the text, same kinda way to show date (instead of just AUG 21, 2013 AD until the end of time). Date updates every day and picks a new historic news quote from the list. I'm no technical genius but I think that's not too hard to do. Could even add a seasonal message for a particular day like Happy Holidays from CFC.
