Civ 4 running very slowly for some reason

I loaded up civ 4 today and for some reason it is running excruciatingly slow, this has never been a problem for me before and my computer is still running just fine I can't identify what might have caused this although DoC has been screwing me for the past few days.

I've had this when the fan on my computer stopped working and the clock speed of the processor was automatically reduced to stop overheating. Didn't notice it outside of the game, only when the game was running and loading the system.

That sounds a lot like what's happening to me, i'll check it out.
