CIV 4 sends cpu into persistent rebooting

I've been playing CIV4 on my machine on and off for a few months. It doesn't play tremendously well (laggish on big maps after about 1800AD) and the 3D leaders are buggy but up until today it HAS played.

Today when I start a game, I get a few turns and then the computer reboots... after that it persistently reboots over and over after the ram-check. I've had to cold boot the machine to get it to run again. Windows and other games are running just fine but CIV4 is sending my machine off the deep end.

Any suggestions?

At first I thought I was losing my harddrive but I'm not having any problems at all except when running CIV4.

I'm sorry to say it, but it doesn't really matter if no other games or applications are having problems. If your computer is rebooting (either BSOD or actually hard-resetting), there's something wrong with it. Causes can range from damaged hardware or a weak power supply to bad drivers.

I believe it's the fan on my video card. I took my puter apart and the video-card fan isn't moving at all... odd that it would still play some other games but obviously the card is overheating (sans fan) with CIV 4.

I had similar problem with ATI Radeon 9500, once I pulled the fan apart and dusted everything off, it has worked fine since. It is amazing how much dust can collect inside a system.
