I have all the expansions and I have been playing a lot of beyond the sword, however, I was wondering if I could use all the BTS civs but play only with the rules from Civ 4 vanilla or Warlords and not have the espionage bar and some of the units introduced in bts.

THat would need to be a mod - it might already be done. Basically it would just need to modularly add in the missing CIVs/UB/UU's into CIV4 & Warlords CustomAssets folders. As it stands now all the games are patched up to the same level, the only "rules" missing from CIV4 & Warlords should be ones that don't exist - due to the mechanic not existing (espionage, corps, etc).

You can do it yourself if you wanted to but it will take a lot of work. There's lines in the XML of the later civs that don't exist in the original so you'd have to find them all and remove them. I tried it with Warlord one time and it was more trouble than it was worth IMO.

Some BtS stuff would be itchy to put in Warlords or Vanilla. I'm talking specifically of the Portuguese UB, that is a substitue for a BtS introduced building that suposedelly magnifies a thing that didn't existed in Warlords or Vanilla....

Other issue would be how the non BtS AI would deal with things like Carrack, East Indiamen or Balista Elephant......

The AI doesn't need more rules/programming to deal with new units - since all the units have a common basis: What is their STR, what is their Bonus VS, what do they do?
None of the UUs add any new functionality - its just alternate stats. Thus the code for how the AI handles units would not change.
Now the customs house would require code - due to it adding functionality: changing how much commerce is generated by trade that is "overseas".

Yup.... for adding feitoria, you ( don't actually have to, but it is better for balance issues ) have to add costum houses as well and the concept of overseas trade, that does not exist in pre-BtS IIRC ( dunno if you should add what they do or what they are supposed to do  ). Nothing too big, but clearly needs more than adding in the XML.

P.S I was rethinking this and reminded of privateers.... IIRC there was no hidden nationality in pre-BtS.
