Civ 5 disc/steam compatibility?

My friend recently bought civ5 on steam while it was in the sale however he didn't purchase Gods and Kings. I was wondering if he bought Gods and Kings on disc as it is cheaper than on steam would it work correctly as I know some games on steam have issues with mixing steam downloads and disc copies.

This shouldn't be a problem at all, because there is essentially no Civ5 version without Steam (if you ignore one Mac specific version).
If you buy a disc of Civ5 or G&K ,then you'll also get a Steam key, and you don't need the disc at all, you could also throw it away (but installing from Disc will be a bit better for your internet connection, especially if you don't have a flatrate ).
