As the release date gets closer, I'm getting twitchier and twitchier to play this game. I'm on a Mac, though, and I'm not going to pay an extra $130 to acquire a Windows license just to play it (well, not YET anyway) so I want to get it running under Crossover (Wine).

Does anyone know how the programming language and what not compares to Civ 4--which would run under Wine? I know it's not Python scripting anymore--what's the replacement? Does anyone happen to know much about this stuff? I just want to get running on day one because, well, I'm a freak and really, really want to play.

this guy isn't trying to pirate the game, he just trying to run it on what is essentially an emulator.

If you don't mind buying OEM instead of retail, it can be cheaper than $130. It will just only allow you to ever install it on one machine. If you call yourself a fanatic, then you will buy a copy of windows to play the game. Emulators like Wine never work well for large games like this, at least not until people have worked on it for a long time. And even if you managed to get it to work or a Mac version of the game came out eventually, you will still have lots of trouble playing certain mods. With the amount of time you'll spend trying to get it to work on your Mac OS, it would be way more worth it to buy windows.

I got cheap copies of Windows Vista and XP through the University here in Nebraska. If you have a friend who attends a university and if that university has deals with MS... you might be able to get such a deal as well.

30 bucks for both rather than over 300.

Yeah, I tried that. The university version is only an upgrade. It won't accept it's own product code once installed--but it spends an hour installing and never explains why it refuses to work. It took five Microsoft operators to find out that it just wasn't going to let me. That's the experience that made me decide no Microsoft for me.

Well, there's is a limit to my fanaticism, I guess. I was going to do it, but I'm so ticked at Microsoft (see above) that I don't want to and I wasn't willing to spend that much.

I'm hoping Wine will do until the Mac version comes out. Otherwise...well, you might be right. I may resort to buying Windows...maybe.

You mean they'll make it work eventually--or there are ways to make it work? I don't know how to tweak it to get it to work.

Yep... someone will eventually make it work. Most probably first time will be impossible for us mere mortals and only for the enlightened programmers, but then it will be easy as installing. Then steam will upload a new version and wine will crash. Then someone will make it work. Then it will crash again and so on... until firaxis stops patching the game or steam stops upgrading versions. :)

(don't get me wrong, I double-boot from ubuntu only to play SC2 and cIV)

EDIT. (... but before SC2 I actually played cIV in Wine ;) )
