civ 6 crashing after installing patch

Haven't played for a few weeks, installed new patch via steam. Started random civ, emperor difficulty, continents, disaster lvl 2. As soon as I meet a new civ the game 'freezes'. The city state meeting were fine, only when I meet a 'regular' civ it freezes. The overhead display disappears along with any/all onscreen command options. Pressing 'esc' on keyboard was only 'command' I could get to work.

I restarted the game twice and did random civ same results. Any advice?

Does it remain hung, or does it crash to desktop when this happens?

It hangs, I have to press 'esc' on keyboard and restart.
