Hello CivFanatics community,

As a huge fan of the franchise and mod enthusiast I propose a change to the Unit, Tech, Wonder and civic icons to a more favorable style. I personally love Civ V art style the most and used it as an example. Idk about you guys but to me the game looks a lot more pleasing to the eye with the Civ V art style. If anyone would like to colaberate on this project please let me know, I would love to provide help and resources. I'm not a tech guy but I would love to learn. Please comment below tell me what you think ?

Would make unit icons so much better at a glance when checking what's in a commander.

It's also pretty easy to update icons, afaik there's already a tutorial for that.

I think the Civ V art style makes it breath taking. Obviously their is alot of tech and civics and building new icons will need to be made for.

Same, I am also keen on replacing some of the icons particularly for resources (really like Rome 2 Style) and Old world (yields, just slightly recolored). If there is a template mod for it, would be great to add it there

While I like the idea, one question comes in mind, how the new style will play out on the actual map?
I believe the initial aesthetics were chosen to make sure the user can distinguish one unit from another on a hex grid...

Also, we should bear in mind that some units have different models (landships, tanks etc)

The unit icons on the map will stay the same, the icon changes would be for the production menu and tech tree. The actual icons on the map will remain

Unless a UI scripter can tell me otherwise, this isn't how it can work currently. Both the production/tech tree icons and map icons will be the same for units.
 
These concepts look great and I actually had the same idea, already been testing it out with some Civ V resource icons implemented. Feel the same way about Civ V's art style, it's an art deco masterpiece! Unfortunately replacing art assets is kind of inconsistent right now in my experience but if you want to collaborate, feel free to shoot me a message.

It seems @Cyberdisc has figured it out already (btw great old CIv 5 vibe) but there was also a post from @Gedemon on the basic modding which focuses on replacing tech png icon. If someone can share the broader mod framework for art replacement, that would be amazing.

I have gathered some of the decent UI/art style examples from various 4X/Strategies, might drop a big post later on highlighting some of those.

Is the map resource/yield icons updated in a separate file to the base-standard/data/icons? I've been trying to update culture yield icon (using three different png) but so far only the icon in the main menu gets updated (although the xml file tries to update all 5 variations of yield_culture)
