I'm genuinely really suprised Civ 7 has moved away from being like half European civs but if there's one thing the series can work on it's the rule of having 5 native civs with 3 always being Maya , Aztecs (Under Montezuma) and Inca (Under Pachacuti) and then 2 wild card ones. So far we have the Maya without a leader, Inca with Pachacuti and the Mississippians and Shawnee and what appears to be no Aztecs yet. I like how it seems like each region of the world is getting their own path, Southern Europe, Southeast Asia, China, India but it feels like for the Americas they just lump both continents as one region. Unless the Aztecs or some wild card mesoamerican civ is added for the Exploration era the Mayan's natural pick will be a civ from a completely different continent on the other side of the equator with completely different geography.
And while I fully expect the Aztecs to be added later we could really bennefit from at least one other mesoamerican civ because even in this day and age the Aztecs and the Mayans are more or less the sole ones credited for civilziation in Ancient Mexico and Central America when in reality the region was teeming with civilizations. That's why I proposed the Zapotecs as we haven't really seen a native civ with a strong focus on culture and economy.
I'm assuming for the modern era we'll get Mexico as the joint central and South America pick, maybe Brazil if we're lucky. For the north they might add one more wild card plains or northeast tribe because I feel like there'd be backlash if the US was the final stage in that tree. I get that we probably will have to wait for DLC to get more obscure civs and that civs like Portugal and the Ottomans will probably take presscedent but I do hope with this new civ switching system it gives the devs more incentive to flesh out civs with more loosely historcial paths. Like maybe the Inca's can get the Nazca or Norte Chico as a Antiquity culture. And I stand by my choice of the Metis, because how cool would it be to be able to transition into them as either someone like the Shawnee or Normans.
And honestly that's another thing I am hoping for, more civs that overlap or at least can be transitioned into more historically by multiple civs. For the first example it would be cool if as the Romans you have the choice of becoming the Byzantines or the HRE. Or the other way around with more civs having Norman like cultures in which multiple groups have a claim to that history with it being in modern france but being founded by people farther north. I think most civs should have a historical path but there's also got to be some wiggle room for player choice to adapt to the players playstyle and the issues they may be facing in that game.
