Civ conversion causes instant loss

When I tried to convert one of my existing G&K civ mods to BNW, I added the correct flavours to a new XML and thought that would be the end of it. However, every time I start a game with the mod enabled (not necessarily as one of the added civs either), no units spawn, the map is completely clouded save for a few geometrically perfect triangles of sea on the minimap, and I immediately get the desert statue scene. Any idea what causes this?
 
lua.log will contain some errors from the map/terrain generator - those can sometimes give clues
