Civilization is a great digital board game that does a great job of giving me the feeling of leading a nation through many eras, but I think we can all agree that the AI in all CIV games are nowhere near realistic, and it takes Multiplayer to fix that.
I'm really disappointed in the CIV development team for not making the multiplayer more enjoyable. They have known about the problem of leavers in multiplayer games for a decade now, and they have made zero efforts to stop it.
I think it would be easy to discourage people from leaving games by introducing a ranking system, considering people who leave as a loss, and awarding people who complete the game wins. This would also separate out players who take the game seriously as they would win more often, gain elo, and be matched with each-other.
Such a simple system could be made within a month by a single modder, so why does the Civilization dev team not do this themselves? It's because their executive decision making team is old, and out of touch with the user base. They likely do not even play this game for enjoyment themselves. It's tragic no real competition has shown up to show Fireaxis how a game like this could really be done.
I really like Civ because it's the best Humanity can offer in this kinda turn based strategy game, but I really resent the dev team for not having the foresight to make multiplayer what it could have been after 6 versions in a row.
