Hi guys,
I've been learning Chinese for a while, and I'd like to try reading some Chinese CIV forums for practice, or even playing the game in Chinese language, if possible.

Does anyone know any community websites that might be interesting for me? I checked the CFC links, but no luck there.
I remember that some time ago I saw some screenshots of a Chinese version - does anyone know if there's a way to switch the language to that, or some mod that does this, or would I have to buy a Chinese version of the game?

I'd be happy about any suggestions!

There is a official chinese ( and probably a lot of unofficial ) version of civ IV, but it is highy censored and some of the LH were simply removed... not sure if there is a chinese BtS ATM

You can just listen to podcasts in Chinese while you play. I listen to internet radio in the languages that I'm learning, which helps because I can play civ and hear the world news at the same time, not to mention other interesting things if it's quality programming. I guess reading and listening to Chinese are different things since the writing system is so complex, but if you can understand spoken Chinese, there are tons of good podcasts or internet radio stations that you can get for free with real player or windows media player, check it out.

And anyway, I've heard some of the translations are kind of buggy for Civ4. The Spanish one at least has some issues...hilarious actually, the Spanish version of the Empire Earth 3 page has what looks like a rough copy of the Spanish translation loaded up, full of typos, errors, and little self-notes like "(chariots?)" that the translators wrote to themselves. I don't know how good the translations are for games.

Thanks for all the advice, I will take a look around, see what I can find. :) Unfortunate that it's not possible to just switch the language without buying the Chinese version, but I suppose you can't have everything. ^^

Listening to something would be a good thing of course, but my language skill is not quite good enough for that yet. :( Also when I read forum texts and the like, I'd be quite lost without a dictionary (Babylon rocks for this).
Anyway, I'm sure that will improve with time, so practice is what I need! :)

IMHO, Civ series is not a big hit for the Chinese so it may be difficult to find. Chinese game players are generally of the younger generation (not including me, too bad), and they tend to gravitate toward games with a bit more wars and actions (Warcraft, Heroes of Might and Magic, Diablo....). There are also competitors from Japan (e.g. Romance of three kingdom series).

The censoring in Chinese forums is actually not that bad. Just avoid too much politics (unfortunately something hard to avoid when there are different civs in a game) and you are fine. Seriously I've seen enough criticism on the PRC and Mao and I rarely find those posts getting deleted.

1) What has you being Chinese got to do with anything? Apart from perhaps the fact that you seem to have distorted views that border on bigotry?

2) Same as 1), you're Chinese and you don't like Chinese, so you don't like yourself? And?

3) Unrelated?

To the OP: You'll probably learn more joining a forum that is for Chinese people, maybe one for the discussion of Chinese language tv series rather than one that centres around gaming.

And one reminder to the OP: if you really want to join a forum in China, make SURE you have all the antivirus/ antispyware programs installed, updated and enabled, don't click on any popups, and don't give out anything crucial like your regular E-mail account and any credit card info. I don't want to stereotype, but as a Chinese I have to admit some of my fellows are indeed way too "smart". Regardless people are generally nice.
