Civ IV broke up with me!

Hi all,

I just upgraded my computer from an Athlon 5000 with Win XP to the following:

Athlon Phenom 9550
M3N-HT mobo
Seagate 1TB HD
8 MB PC6400
Geforce 260n
Windows XP64

I believe the operating system is what Civ hates, what happens is this:

Install vanilla Civ IV fine.
Installed latest patch.
Install Warlords, get an error, it aborts after a bit.
Tried to install BtS, it installed seemingly without error.
Installed latest patch, got no indicator about patch progress, but when I tried to do something else in game it told me patch in progress, sit my butt down and wait.

After a LONG time, I finally just killed the program with the program manager and tried to run the game. The intro screens ran fine, the game ran fine up to the custom game screen, once I selected the settings I wanted and tried to go on, it crashed. Repeatedly.

Is there a fix or are Civ and I never going to be together again?

I feel jilted.

Are you letting the game patch itself from its menus, or did you download the patch from here and install "manually?"
