Get going good and the game crashes; screen disappears and I'm back at main Windows screen ( which is usually scrambled and must be refreshed to see). If there's a patch or fix for this I'd sure appreciate having it.
Thanks all and play on!

Well, I'll have to admit that I've not tried 1.52 yet (have a previous game to finish first, but no time to play it). Still, the game used to crash on me all the time, until I installed Harkonnen's fix. That's what made my game stable...

I rather hoped that 1.52 would have included that fix also, but it seems that Firaxis did not quote grasp the idea behind H's fix...

Hi all
I played civ many years ago ... bought civ4 and I am having great difficulty in playing it. It goes through all the loading sequences and then comes back to my desktop. Other times it loads and plays ... and when I click enter .. everything is lost. When I CAN play it .. I am saving every turn. I am very disappointed with it. Maybe the problem is very easy to solve??? Help!!! please. When it works it is brilliant. I don't even know if I am posting this query, so I hope somone sees it? Thanks

Same problem here - I was running fine on 1.09 and when I patched to 1.52, I commonly have CTD's every turn, making the game almost unplayable if I wasn't as stubborn. After it crashing it gives me two error dialogs, but the text is so missed up by the crash that it is unreadable in it's entirety. I'll try to post the entire message tonight when I get home from work.

Have you looked at the startup and in-game log-files? Turning on logging is described here: http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_logging.htm

Have you updated to the latest ATi or nVidia graphics drivers? Both updated their drivers last week.

I've had some problems with late-game crashing, and the game was slow when I first played it, but nothing as bad as what you're describing. If you're using an nVidia card, you might try setting the Image Settings to "High Performance" - this helped graphics performance for me.

Got Civ4 on christmas day to my delight, installed it straight away!

Launched from desktop short cut.....
Loading screen pops up...

Crashes back to desktop =(

I have installed the latest patch and downloaded the latest ATi graphics drivers for my Radeon 9800 Pro, and yet this problem still percists!

I install it on my mates pc who uses a geforce card and plays with NO problems what so ever!

Is there anything else I can try to do to get the game working again? Or is it a case of waiting for a patch to solve the problem?

anyone here got a 6800?

Yes, same problem with a 6800LE. Although I had no problems with v1.00, problems got a bit worse with v1.09, but I could live with them (3 crashes in a month or so). With v1.52, I could not go for 5 turns without a crash. Discovering a tech, popping a goodie-hut or sometimes even starting would make the screen go all black with a hard reboot as the only solution to the problem. I went back to v1.00 today and upgraded to v1.09: still the same problems, so I don't think it's patch related, but videocard related. I bought a 6800 especially for this game

I'll try defragging my HD and maybe even get a better power supply (380W atm with 4 HDs)...

See this thread but note that it does NOT work with the 1.52 patch. I used it with 1.09 and it made the game playable for me where I always had CTD before.

Thanks for the help, however this still didnt solve my problem.
done a fresh install, downloaded the zip from the other thread, patched that in, and followed the step by step word for word, and its still crashing on the loading screen back to desktop :(

On some other discussions people have suggested logging on to Windows as a different user to clear any broken settings files (or user-specific registry settings?). A reinstall of Civ4 wouldn't clear out your user directory our user-registry, so logging on as someone else might be beneficial.

I have just purchased civ 4 but the DVD doesn´t run (it dosen´t even begin to install). I have exchanged it at the store but it still dosen´t work. The driver works fine with other disks and my computer fulfills all (and exceeds most) of the minimum system requirements.

Anyone who knows how to solve this

And where can I find this patch?

Thanks,

I have exactly the same problem. Get a good game going, it lags then crashed out to windows. Windows even says it's a CIV4 error. We need a new patch. I have 1.52 applied and it doesn't work. It also locks trying to do the 'crash dump' and locks if you try and update the patch within the game.

I'm running a . . .

P4 2.6GHz
1.00GB of RAM
60G Harddrive (with 20G free space)
Nvidia GeForce 6800GT (and I don't want to overclock OR underclock it)

All updated drivers, all updated patches. I'm running my game in LOW settings (which is a crime) and my game constantly crashes to a psychadelic looking/cross hatched screen of death that can only be cured by a hard reboot.

HELP!!!

I would try updating the driver for the DVD first. I believe that Civ has a copy protect scheme that doesn't work with all drives so you may have to get a new DVD drive.

Some people have had success by uninstalling their cd burning software. I gather that it can conflict with the copy protection.

You may want to try turning off your antivirus software and see if that helps.

Turning off or uninstalling software is an extreme fix IMO but as a last resort who knows what levels we will go to play the game.

I have noticed that the video memory problem starts to happen for me once I cross the 1100AD timeline. Before that, I never receive a crash. I have tested this with 3 games now. Can anyone else confirm this? Maybe it is related to a specific technology graphic that I enable via research at about the same time period in all of my games? Still testing....
