Start is quite bad. Settle on Silk and start making those Eagle Warriors.

Jeans and perfumes do count for the bonus , right ?
I'm not sure I tested it , only assumed so.

If they don't, they totally should, because Eagle Warriors dressed in jeans and smelling like the latest fashion would clearly fight better than Eagle Warriors without such fineries.

I'm pretty sure they don't. I had toys and jeans in my game. I ended up with +10 at the end, but I'm pretty sure those were all actual luxuries.

As for that start mentioned above, I'd just reroll. That start is horrid. Now I do see the value of settling on luxuries (there's an excellent youtube video giving city settling advice that showed me the power of this), but that same video I mentioned mentions the need to have workable tiles directly adjacent to the city with good yields. Moving south means you have nothing to work at start. And you'll have to buy tiles to have anything good to work. A truly horrible starting location. The horses is the only decent tile. The sheep are desert sheep which suck. The spices are good, but far away.

I'll mention the patch, but I don't think the recent patch will change any of our analysis of the Aztecs in this thread. But I may be missing something. Feel free to chip in if I forget something. I can't see any of the balance changes affecting the Aztecs in any way different than it would affect all civs.

Okay so despite it being a poor start, I chose to carry on and not restart. I have settled on the silk and got fortunate by receiving a builder from a goody hut. Now to start to pumping them Eagle Warriors out! The trouble is, where are all the other civilizations??

Gilgamesh has appeared! He has just declared war on Toronto, and seeing as I have some units in the area its looking like I will helping be Toronto defend its city. A trade route has been established to provide quicker movement once in the Classical era.

Was nice knowing you Gilga, now never mess with Toronto again!

Now do I find out where Russia is an continue to act as a warmonger or chill out for a bit?

This is a pretty interesting start though I sorta botched it by failing to Horsemen even with 2x Oligarchy Swords :S

But I also managed to get the Great Library and Oracle so pretty ahead in science right now. Biggest threat right now is a religious victory but since I captured a Holy Site, I could probably borrow another religion to deal with it. Would also not want to wipe people out as a result

Builder ability helps quite a bit on this map as...
Spoiler :

So much awful flatland. No production and these cities would have been crap otherwise. Some Magnus to clear cut the few forests and jungle around.

Will probably upgrade and attack again once I hit Nationalism

I didn't enjoy Aztecs as much as I thought I would. I didn't seem to really get such a big boost from capturing enemies early and having workers, and I only used my workers a few times to rush build my districts. I guess they just aren't really one of my favorite civilizations, I probably won't play them again, but I really did enjoy trying something new!

I also think I had like one of my all time worst starting locations, lol.

That's pretty awful. Hopefully you'll discover a natural wonder. I'd probably just open all eagle warriors with this and hope to steal some builders.

I'd march my unfortunate butt north a couple turns and hope for the best.

I played 3 matches with the Aztecs after reading this thread - I had middling starting locations each time, but managed to snowball so much from the early warfare->capture builders->fast districts -> cruise to victory of your choice (even played higher than my usual difficulty level after the first one) that I ended up coming to the same conclusion as you - It's fun trying something new, but they're not making my favorites' list either.

I finished my playthrough but was waiting for more people to bring this thread back up.;)

It turned out to be much harder than expected because Seondeok overran her continent and suddenly went from behind me in science to way ahead. Thus the typical spy raid to slow her down.

Meanwhile, Seondeok wiping out Shaka means there's only 5 civs in the game! Wilhelmina has converted 4/5 which is dangerously close to a religious victory. I liberate France and despite me conquering most of her ciites, we become allies and her existence makes a religious victory harder. I also co-opt her religion to stop Wilhemena's.

Nobody's a Suzerain besides me. I love containment. Pericles is pissed, though in all fairness the AIs killed the other CS's.... they need a buff.

The capital.... not the best. But nice.

Also as a side note the AI seems really fond of fascism.

my current Egypt game I'm seeing the AI go for Fascism, my above Aztec game was played before the patch dropped, however. Before the patch I mostly saw Monarchy and Democracy.

Is there something that determines if you get a free builder or not? I realized quickly that I have to get the kill. I wasn't getting builders if I was putting them in the red, and killing them when they attack me. I also realized I dont get slaves from killing scouts.

But some occasions I dont get a slave for non-obvious reasons. with Sumerian war carts, sometimes I capture them, sometimes I dont. does it matter if I do a little damage with an archer but then kill with the warrior? or does 100% of the damage have to come from the warrior? I also occasionally didn't capture opposing archers and maybe a warrior.

Edit: actually I was able to get a builder from a scout, so that earlier part wasn't accurate.

Hey guys, so I tested the bonus Great Merchant Luxs. I just happened to be surrounding New Orleans when I earned John Spilsbury. I checked my musketman and he was getting +9 from Luxuries. I moved John to my CH and popped him. When I checked again, my musketman was getting +10 from Luxuries. IDK about Jeans, but Toys does give you the attack bonus.

Good to know. I should have checked in my game. It's hard to remember to check before and after popping the GM.
