Civ V constantly crashes along with Steam

I bought the Gold edition of Civ 5 on the Steam summer sale and have attempted to play some multiplayer games with friends, but the amount of crashes is making the game completely unplayable.

At completely random points - no matter how long I have been playing or what actions I have been doing - Civ V and Steam will freeze. No error message, just that it stops responding. Sometimes I can play for two hours, and other times I can only manage a couple of minutes before I crash.

The same thing also happens whenever I am kicked from a multiplayer game.

I have only played the single player for about 30 minutes but it has not crashed during that time.

Things I have tried:
  • Installing latest graphics drivers
  • Turning off second monitor
  • Running in windowed mode
  • Turning vsync on and off
  • Running in dx9
  • Reinstalling Civ 5
  • Reinstalling Steam
  • Reinstalling the game on my SSD
  • Deleting the .db files in documents/civ 5/cache
  • Running the dx setup in the Civ files
  • Pinning Civ to 2 (/12) cores

None have made any difference.

System specs:
Windows 7 64 bit
Intel i7 990x @ 3.47 GHz
12 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 580

I've had the exact same problem, although I don't have the gold edition. Just purchased the game and all exp packs separately. But every time I play, the game crashes. I have a very high end PC and this is the ONLY game I ever have troubles with. Frustrating.

Steam has been pushing out an update for itself the last couple of days. You may have trouble until you get the latest. July 26th build just updated on my system.

I had the exact same problem and tried all of the things you did without success. I also have a GTX 580. I was quite close to giving up the game as the crashes were so annoying. In the background was a dialog box showing an "FGXRenderer11::Present failed hr=DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" error. This dialogue box wouldn't take focus or show up in the task bar so even if you have this error you might not have realized it.

What finally worked for me was to use dx10 and go in and turn all the video settings except resolution to the their lowest setting. I haven't had a crash in well over 40 hours of play. It doesn't look nearly as good but it sure is nice to be able to play!

I've experimented with turning some of the video options up slowly. Pretty much everything is now on medium and it isn't crashing. If I remember I'll try turning each setting up to high one-at-a-time and see if it errors. Since errors would only occur every few hours for me it might be awhile before I figure out which setting is the culprit.

I hope this works for you to. It took a lot of pain to find a workable solution.
