I want to start this post by saying that I am not a pirate and I believe that it is important to buy the games you enjoy.

However, I think it is very interesting to note that Civ V has already been cracked by the pirates. This comes after a lot of work to make Civ V's copy-protection difficult to crack. I just think it is interesting that gaming companies will go to such extremes to protect their games (often hindering the legitimate gamer's experience) when they are still cracked in a little under a week.

So my question is, why even have protection? It is never going to stop the pirates, and it usually just leads to unnecessary hoops for the actual gamer to go through.

It's like those alarms at the exits to stores or the guys that check receipts. They deter casual theft, but they don't catch the really dedicated.

The problem comes when otherwise honest users find the copy-protect so onerous they use the cracked version.

The reason to protect is simple, garantuee once income and profit. SO i'm for the protection systems in game.
I'm an industrialist in EvE Online and I make sure my goods are protected untill the moment there sold.

On the other hand I disgust the recent developments in such systems like those used by EA, that can result in legal copies being blocked.

Allse not big on number of install limits.

The protection system of civ V is one that is widely used by other games ( Steam ). Given that, it is almost a copy-paste issue to port one of those crack solutions from those other games to civ V.

No surprise here.

Nowdays software houses fight piracy mainly with patches try to cutting out from the market the older versions.

Any game will eventually be cracked by pirates. It's more interesting to note that with Civ5 it took several days for it to happen rather than on or before release date. No doubt this forced many pirates who were eagerly anticipating the game to break down and actually buy it. And I say, good :D

Although I don't like when software protection is onerous to the legitimate owners, I'm a software developer and I strongly believe the publishers have every right to protect their product, and earn the dollars they deserve. It's a shame that they have to go to such extreme lengths, but then again, so do the thieves.

We suffer because of the pirates, not because the software houses enjoy having to spend more money and development time on coming up with draconian protection methods.

It had a record torrent download by the way :) 20,000 people were downloading it for 48 hours from a single seeder on Pirate Bay. Read those comments, it hilarious :)

Yea. It's never a question of whether the DRM will be broken (it always will), but a question of when. Steam succeeded because Civ 5 wasn't cracked until 3 days after its release date despite stores selling it early. That's a success.

This is why Steam is so stupid, because it only hurts the paying customers.

Assassins Creed 2 held for about 3 weeks, now thats a success. 3 days is not much, comparing to that.

Thats good. Let me say something about pirating... it takes one time, just one time to get a virus off those cracks then the people who download it will be furious. Scan it all they want even with the best anti virus and when it don't detect it, hopefully they dont have passwords or credit card information stored on their computer. You may not even know, after you run the crack, game loads right up but little do you know, 10,000 hackers now have your passwords or credit card info. There are a lot of silent viruses out there. Some stay on your comp and record every keystoke and can get around even the best anti viruses. A lot of these groups that put up the torrents, they are not just doing this so people have the game free, they want your information. Then, when patches start to be released, good luck patching the game. So if risking all of that is worth it to someone instead of paying $50 good luck to them in the future. I have assests and would never put my identity at risk for a $50 game, simple solution is to just buy it and be worry free.

Pirates get to play the game with no steam and quicker start ups

Paying customers suffer

Thanks alot Sid

Also I agree with this. Cracked code leaves the window open enough especially since you're voluntarily installing all components. Kids don't think of that though. It just adds up when family vacation time comes along and dad's bank account is $1.04
