Most of the time since Civ VI release, Civ V was way ahead in the number of concurrent players: almost 20K more players at some points.

But in the last few days, CIV VI has narrowed the gap. Now it's around 5K.

What do you think is the cause of this change? Was the discounted price during the winter holidays that mattered most? Is it because some YouTubers like Marbozir started to play again? Is it the good way the game has come with the last patch (after the buggy summer patch)? Or is it just the hype of Rise&Fall being released in about one month?

Here is the link of the comparison graphs.

It's probably a combination of hype and having the game in relatively good condition at the moment.

But if I'm reading the graphs correctly, it's only in the past two it the days that the gap has narrowed considerably. So I don't think it's rise and fall hype

Civilization 5 has had around 7 years of development and finally is a half decent game after the community rescued it with the Vox Populi mod. Civ VI is the far superior game, even in its rough and ready state. As the expansions come out and more content is released along with more and more mods, Civ VI will absolutely blow Civilization 5 out of the water.

People are slowly figuring it out. That, plus it’s a great deal right now. People are frugal in these uncertain economic times.

I think it's a combination of game improvements and just selling a lot more copies due to recent sales (i.e. it's been half price in the last few steam sales).

How did you guys get into Civ6? I've been playing since Civ2, probably have 4000 hours in the franchise, and Civ6 is the least fun for me so far. The whole Eureka thing makes me angry. Terrible game design. I don't like the changes made to great people either. Combat AI has never been worse, even Civ2 was better. I like the idea of districts and city building, but it's all so horribly balanced that adjacency bonii and planning hardly seem to matter.

I don't know why, I just can't get into this game.

Uh, what's wrong with the awesome why-wasn't-this-in-the-previous-five-editions eurekas? Or the "which person you get actually matters" great people? I'll give you that the AI is bad, but that's by no means something exclusive to Civ VI in the franchise. I also fail to see how the game is balanced so badly that adjacencies don't matter.

Well if you consider Civ2 combat better, not sure anything will make this game for you. Civ2, build a bunch of howitzers and annihilate everything. Good times.

The release of R&F really oughta catapult Civ VI over Civ V in the charts.

It won't last...But one day I imagine Civ 6 will finally overtake 5 which is now very old.

Also Humble Bumble deal is an attempt to sell more copies of R&F.

Oh yeah, I remember that. Howitzers on enemy Railroads meant effective teleportation to every enemy city in the game too. I do want them to bring back Railroads.....but never again like that!

    This.

Won't work with me though. I'll wait patiently until I can buy the rest of Civ6 for under $15. Civ8 Vox Populi will hold me over easily until then.
