Great! I'd like a printable one with the nations on etc though like we've had in the past.

I actually bothered to print out the whole Civ manual - bit of a waste of time that was!

This is a really nice guide that you've put together! In my first pass through the presentation of the Great People by era and the Promotions are especially valuable, but found myself lingering on the government and city-states pages also. Thanks for your work and for sharing.

One note, in your units section, all of your gold costs to purchase are equal to the production cost (Cavalry 330 production, 330 gold to buy). I thought gold to hammers to buy a unit was 4 to 1. Maybe check on that, could have been a placeholder as you were building, or maybe I'm mistaken.

Check what the civilopedia says against the reference. One of the things I did as it neared release was to verify *everything* in my tables to the civilopedia. Also note 'base' part of 'base cost', things change during the game and may start differently if you have modified the standard game settings. The 'base' is the value various effects currently active apply against.

Ah, yes, you are right. I do recall the Civilopedia using the same gold cost also, even though in-game the actual base cost is 4:1 (but can be discounted). Obviously I can understand why they have a base gold cost in code, maybe not the most helpful thing to display in the civilopedia...shocking allegations against the Civilopedia, I know.

I've been faith-buying a lot of Cossacks lately and realized that because the faith to hammers cost is 1.7, with policy cards you can make 1 faith worth more than 1 hammer in terms of making military units, which was rather surprising to me. I need to do the math on gold-buying units in terms of building commerce hub infrastructure, layering in city-state bonuses and maybe Papal Primacy, running the double yield of gold buildings card at Enlightenment, and then building Big Ben to double treasury before gold-buying with Merchant Republic. Max building yield of a faith district is 22, max building yield of a gold district is 60 after enlightenment and after big ben doubles treasury....I think gold buying ends up ahead without taking time-values (only running Enlightenment for a short time before Big Ben) or Big Ben production cost into account...but yeah I'm a little deep into analysis of gold and faith costs of units at the moment. :crazyeye:

Some users may not be familiar some of the options in Acrobat Reader. When it first comes up, move the mouse to the center bottom of the window. A black bar will appear with some options on it. Click on the 3 cornered icon at the far right of the bar and the bar will go away and the toolbar will appear at the top of the window. Then right-click in the top toolbar and move the mouse over 'Show Page Navigation Tools' in the menu that appears. A submenu will appear, click on 'Show All Page Navigation tools'. Six round buttons with various arrows on them will appear on the toolbar.

Mouse over these buttons and read the tooltips. With these buttons you can move forward and back through places you been to in the document. This is just like the forward/back buttons in a browser. In other words, if you've been jumping around in the links you can back up to places you have been. This is especially useful if you have followed a link from a table row and want to go back to that row to try another link from the row. Using the buttons is easier than jumping back to 'Contents' and then jumping back to the table row. This is one of the big reasons the Reference is distributed as PDF.

If you're a fan of keyboard commands, you can read the key equivalents to clicking the buttons in their tooltips. These key equivalents are live even if you haven't made the toolbar appear.

Since so many things cause changes against the base you'd be SOL for figuring out effects if you couldn't get the base value.

Very nice! This way I can have the 'pedia open on a second monitor while I play. \o/

Where did you get the graphics from?

By screen capture from the game, then Paint.Net for cropping, background removal, and in the case of white icons color inversion.

The promotion trees were constructed from scratch using some modified bits and pieces.

You must have the patience of a saint! I was hoping you'd found some quick and easy way to extract them from the game. Do you mind if I extract some of yours from the PDF to use?

I have no problem with that. But perhaps I could do you one better...

I'll check with the staff here to see if a 25Mb file containing all of them in a directory tree is not to large to offer as a DL.

If that doesn't fly, I'm fine with sending it you individually, if we can set up how to get it done. Most email servers aren't happy with attachments that big.

Some of the font icon group I'm not real satisfied with, particularly Tourism and Inspiration, but I didn't try harder on those in the interest of getting the Reference out so people could use it.

Most of them are pretty high res as I screen captured them in 2560x1440. But the font icon group are pretty low res as they are never shown on screen except in small form.

That would be awesome! I'd obviously credit you (I'm putting together a guide / wiki for a gaming group I belong to). I can PM you an email address that will be fine with a large attachment, but it'd definitely be better if you're able to upload it to this site so that everyone can access it.

Alternatively, do you have a mega.nz, dropbox, google drive, etc account that you can upload it to and just post a link? If not, I'd be happy to upload to mine and share the link with everyone.

I'll wait and see what response you get from the staff.

TBH.. we'll all probably get direct access to each of these authentic resources (in various sizes & formats) when the SDK is released as i feel Firaxis should give us any proper Mod-Tools to extract (even re-save custom files) both the BLP & ArtDefs archives.
Doesn't take away the whole patient work & tasks to create the PDF graphics by @Grumalg, though. :)

Suggestions. Some duplication would be helpful. For example: On the buildings by district area, and additional chart showing adjacency requirements for wonders would be nice (it would not look as good on the districts page). For example:

    Campus:
    ....Library
    ....Madrasa
    ....Research Lab
    ....University
    Wonders (with adjacency requirements/bonuses)
(pic) | Great Library | Campus must have Library; Must be built on flat land
(pic) | Oxford University | Campus must have University; Must be built on Grasslands or Plains

This would make the resource better for planning. A similar list for adjacency requirements for wonders and terrain features might be good too. (Or make this an appendix of adjacency effects.)

    2) An appendix with Lists of (non-obvious) resource sources would be useful.

Appendix A: Sources of Limited Resources:
Envoys are granted by the following:
Civics: Mysticism, Theology, Mercenaries, Naval Tradition, Colonialism (2), Natural History (2), Opera and Ballet (2), Scorched Earth (2), etc
Great People: Zheng He, Ana Nzinga, Simon Bolivar (2), etc.

Spies are granted by the following:
    Civics: Cold War
Technology: Castles (Catherine de Medici only), Computers, etc.

Trade Routes are granted by the following
Districts: Commerce Hub, Harbor, Royal Naval Dockyard
    Governments: Merchant Republic (2)
Great Merchants: Zhang Qian, Irene of Athens, Melitta Bentz
    Wonders: Colossus, Great Zimbabwe

Perhaps for Amenities and Housing, too. Some spy sources seem to be missing from the PDF.

    3) On the governments page, a footnote saying:
Frederick Barbosa's government gains one extra Military Policy.
Gorgo and Pericles' governments gain one extra Wildcard Policy.
The Great Merchant Adam Smith grants one extra Economic Policy.
Alhambra grants one extra Military Policy.
Big Ben grants one extra Economic Policy.
Forbidden City grants one extra Wildcard Policy.
Potala Palace grants one extra Diplomatic Policy.

    Thanks for listening.

EDIT: One last thing. I'm a "save excess pages" freak. So, for example, pages 3 and 4 should just be one page. For long lists like that, I would move the heading Worship Beliefs, Follower Beliefs, etc, to a vertical column on the left of the data and just make those 4 tables, a single table. Same applies to civics and other long tables. I know that kind of layout bothers people but I prefer my information dense. Just a suggestion.

All the adjacency comments in the civilopedia are already included in their entries in various tables. See comments about an appendix below.

All of the above already *are* in the individual entries in their tables. Collecting them together in a separate place is what I was talking about when I mentioned a future appendix of effect cross references in the 'Overview'. Adding that appendix is currently on hold because of the icon sizes making the file too large. Hoping we'll see access to internal game files with smaller icons soon. I could produce smaller versions of the icons, but am not enough of a graphic artist to be sure they will still retain enough detail to be pleasing in appearance with a reduced number of pixels. I may make such an attempt after I finish a current project I'm working on if such internal file access doesn't appear.

Can you point to any civilopedia entries that are missing a Spy reference?

Tables get broken across pages because the original was composed in MSWord in landscape. I am limited in table size by page size and margin limits, so tables long enough to break across pages are therefore split between pages with a new header line and a matching split in contents so they could be gotten to fast via links without a lot of scrolling. In many cases (for example the 'by era' tables - Tech, Civics, etc.) placing two of them on a page would result in the second table running over the page, thus requiring a new header line with few table lines below on next page. The current page splits are a compromise that tries to get as much of a table visible at a time for comparison purposes while minimizing scrolling.

MSWord can split tables anywhere. If all of the beliefs were in a single table and the type of belief were in a column with sideways text spanning all the appropriate rows, it might fit on just two pages instead of three.

My list of spy locations above is complete based on your PDF (even if I included an "etc" above). But it is possible to train more spies than just 2 or 3 so there must be some other places that grant spies. Last night when I ran the game I forgot to look up the additional spots in the tech graph.

I know all the adjacency bonus are elsewhere in the file. My first sentence was "some duplication would be helpful". I missed your note that appendixes were planned. As for size you could always split in half: Civilization Reference Vol 1 Beliefs thru Improvements and Civilization Reference Vol 2 Leaders thru Wonders. PDF format supports cross-PDF linking. Not sure you can do it in MSWord though.
