Civilization Genre HD Video Series:
Welcome to the first episode in a huge video series years in the making where I show you how to play each classic Civilization genre game (including spinoffs) in 1080p HD, while showing off some of their best scenarios and mods along with their interesting and sometimes very different console conversions, plus also trying to play as the Barbarians in each game too. Naturally this first main episode is about Sid Meier's Civilization 1! :) Later in the series I'll also be looking at fan games and naturally at some point I'll get to the more modern Civ games that don't require any tricks to play in HD and will still tribute them too of course! In many cases there's simply too much to cover in one main episode so I'll also be making special extra bonus episodes to compliment the main episodes in the series, so stay tuned!

Main Episode 01 - Civilization 1 HD Tour:
Main video on playing Civ1 in HD with mods & scenarios:

Years in the making this is a huge video tour showcasing Sid Meier's Civilization 1 in HD using CivWIN (not CivNET) in a virtual machine with some of its best mods and scenarios. This is the first main episode in a huge series showing people how you can play classic Civilization genre games in HD on modern systems with some of the best enhancement mods out there. I try to show off some of the best fan made scenarios too (yes, there were scenarios for Civ1!), along with some lesser known console conversions, and I also show you how to play as the normally unplayable Barbarians 8th Civilization slot.

Video Notes:
  • If everything looks too small then you're probably viewing this video on a small screen or phone. Unfortunately Civ1 has no built in zoom controls so if you want things to be bigger then lower the Windows XP resolution inside the Virtual Machine and the game will resize to fit.
  • If it feels a bit choppy and slightly schizophrenic that's because '3 different Blakes' worked on it haha! Basically I made the video in 2018, then came back to it in 2019 and added lots of stuff, and then came back to it again in 2021 and deleted a bunch of stuff & added even more new stuff lol! I tried to intermix and smooth out the transitions between old and new footage as best as I could so hopefully it's not too bad.
  • Just to reiterate as there's still been some confusion. This video and these mods are about CivWIN (Civilization for Windows), not CivDOS, and not CivNET. While CivNET appears very similar to CivWIN it is not identical and these mods & scenarios are not compatible with it.

How to play in HD on modern systems guide:
Now you can see below how I did it and play Civ1 in HD yourselves!
Spoiler Click to expand :
UPDATE - A virtual machine is no longer required to play 16bit applications like CivWIN on modern 64bit OS's thanks to WineVDM! However be warned that map animation does not work and applying a compatibility mode or forced 256 colour mode doesn't solve the issue.

1. Setup a Windows XP VM using VirtualBox. Below is a video guide on how to do that:
youtu.be/7RQyhgvbqKY
(NO I will not illegally give you a copy of Windows XP, use google search lol)

2. Download a copy of Civilization for Windows (as in CivWIN not CivNET), copy it's files into a folder in the XP VM, and test it to make sure it works.
(NO I will not illegally give you a copy of CivWin, use google search lol)

3. Download my Full HQ Soundtrack for CivWin from below. Install it over the top of the game files:
https://www.moddb.com/mods/civwin-complete-soundtrack-overhaul-mod

4. OPTIONAL - Download Honza's DOS graphics for CivWin mod from below. Install it over the top of the game files:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/dos-tileset-for-civwin.8830/

5. Pressing right ALT+F should resize your Windows XP virtual machine to your native Windows resolution (eg on my Windows 7 machine its 1920x1080). If you then start the game it should resize to the new high resolution of the virtual machine and Civilization 1 will be in HD! :)

Example shot of how things should look!

As part of this huge series I'm also making tribute pages with HD pictures and extra info for each game in a big new WIP Civilization series section on my retro gaming website Blake's Sanctum (be warned - the sites navigation is full 90s retro too lol).

@Blake00 I had a watch this morning and thought it was very well done, a nice introduction to playing Civ in 2021. I also sneakily jumped the gun and watched a few of the others directly from the playlist, you've definitely inspired me to try a barbarian game and see how far I get. Also, that Japan only Playstation version blew my damn mind, an isometric port to 32 bit consoles in 1996!? How did that even happen?

Naughty naughty haha but yeah I figured with all the playlist links I'm putting everywhere it would be inevitable that someone would jump ahead of me lol. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed them. I'm still sorting out the documentation, links, related mod uploads, and in-video cards for those bonus episodes. Getting there though so I should have the Barbarian bonus video out tomorrow along with my Barbarian scenario for people to try if they don't wish to make their own. Then the other bonus episodes will follow very quickly over the week.

And yeah the Japanese Playstation version is pretty crazy isn't it.. they almost turned Civ1 into Civ2 haha. That's why I just HAD to do a video of it as there's like nothing out there.

.

Okay here we go guys! The first bonus episode is ready to go!

To coincide with my video release I have of course also finally released my Attila's Conquest I - Play As Barbarians Scenario (CivDOS & CivWin) as well! Which will kick off a whole series of playing as Barbarians in different Civ games. :)

As I'v seen in some YT videos, in Sega Saturn port there are pictograms instead of text in some menus, so theoretically this version's easier to play if you don't know or know very little Japanese (as me).

And I too have no idea about this legion in 3840 BC. No way barbarians can spawn this early. Can it be some other civ? But then why they did not talk to you? Also... in the original game, barbarians cannot kill your last defender in your last city (same for last city of AI civ). If this legion was barbarian, then seems that rule-set of PSX version is very different. Even SNES version have some strange discrepancies with the original, like they did not use original source code for some things at all?

Yeah that was so weird. I'm guessing it must have been another player who didn't want to talk as I was the Greeks in Europe where everyone is super close, they maybe got a legion from a village hut. Otherwise if it was Barbarians then yeah the Playstation developers forgot to port over the Barbarian capital protection from the PC version.

Ahh yes I see what you mean about the picture buttons on the Saturn version.. darn, I probably should have mentioned that in the video but oh well.

Nice video. That playstation version looks really pretty different.

Also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazca_Lines ;)

Well that's embarrassing.. the amount of docos I've seen on cool stuff in South America and not once did any one mention the Nazca Lines haha. Now I'm gonna have every Tom, Dick and Harry correcting me on youtube probably lol.. oh well lol.

I really like the SNES video because I used to play it all the time as a kid before PS 1 and N64 came out. I see that you're America which was pink like China. The railroad was one of my favorite techs. I used to make a whole bunch of settlers and railroad everything! Then I would settle some more cities, make railroads and get them to grow, too. I remember playing civ by putting up other specialists like tax collectors and scientists that aren't entertainers when the railroad brought food surpluses. :smug:

Yeah it's funny how the Civ colours change between all the different versions of Civ1 (DOS, Win, SNES, PS1 etc), no consistency haha. And yeah I'm a bit of a railroad building addict too haha.

I just wondering...Is any mod of Civ4 which emulates Civ1? I mean - has somebody tried to make Civ1 looking like Civ4 (or at least Civ2 or Civ3)?

Ask and thy shall receive haha!

Dunno if you read my mind or something mate but funnily enough you've just touched on my future plans for this thread as while I move on to the next episodes (Colonization, Civ2 etc) Civ1 will not be forgotten about as over the last year I've been able to come across Civ1 graphics mods for Civ2, Civ3 & Civ4 and I think that 'converting later Civ games to Civ1 style' would make a great future bonus episode video so watch this space!

In the meantime here's a round up of what I've found...

There is a Civ1 mod for Civ2 by @CivPartisan that myself, @Kasius Klej and @Metro Polis took and heavily modified into an even bigger mod. I 'demastered' all the world graphics (terrain, cities, units) and @Kasius Klej took it and did even more crazy stuff with animating diplomacy screens and Civ1 style rulesets etc.
https://forums.civfanatics.com/thre...ake-civ2-look-like-civ1.284136/#post-16031579

There were a number of Civ1 mods for Civ3 however sadly most are lost to time or didn't get finished. You'll find the full results of my investigations in a post at the link below. I've managed to successfully speak with some of the authors and they looked for their files but found nothing. I've found a few things though and it's all summaries over in that thread but if anyone here has any of the missing stuff let me know! @Theov is working on a new Civ1 for Civ3 project so fingers crossed his goes better than the other ones lol!
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civ1-mod.37121/#post-16098224

And yes there's a finished Civ1 terrain set for Civ4 by Flobi and I was able to successfully rescue it in the thread linked below! I'm not aware of any other Civ1 mods for Civ4.. eg a rulesets mod. But ya never know what's out there.
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civ-4-terrain-civ-1.142767/page-2#post-16098211

Not aware of any Civ1 mods for Civ5 or Civ6 at this point in time. Younger fan bases so probably less interest plus harder to mod those ones lol.

Have added a new section to the download links area to help bring the communities together...

Civilization 1 Communities:

I made civ 1 in civ 3 a while ago, not a finished product

Well yeah I say new as the other Civ1 mods for Civ3 were made like 10-15 years ago so yours is much newer compared to them lol. Last time we spoke I think you said you were busy but hoped to pick up your project again one day. Hope you do! :)

Hey guys.. in case anyone has been wondering no the video series isn't dead. It's just that the Civilization 2 mod preservation project that feeds into the next big main episode in the series on Civilization 2 massively blew out for another year! Plus I accepted a staff position here at CivFanatics that eats up a bit more time too, and I've had some health troubles slow me down a bit. However I'm back busily working on the big sequel episode! And on top of that I'm also making new bonus episodes for both Civilization 1 and Colonization talking about all the cool stuff I missed the first time around haha!
