Civ VII Weekly Reveal Guessing Thread

You say this as if Brazil hasn’t also been a train wreck for its entire modern existence.

Hosting the World Cup and the Olympics were an exception, not the rule, for Brazil’s history. And also like the only reason Brazil was in the last two games at all.
I disagree, it's got a great deal of political clout this century as a member of BRICS, and it's got one of the largest populations and land areas in the world.

Of course that's a very recent phenomenon, so it's place in the "modern era" as defined in this game is questionable ahead of many other better candidates, and in previous games, behind even more history spanning candidates.

Realistically they have been in as an emerging market to play of national pride, which may be more difficult now with civ switching.

Ibn Batutta, Machiavelli, and Confucius were also very bad choices. Didn’t stop Firaxis.
Of the three, only Confucius feels bad. Chinese history is filled with countless emperors as a Westerner I know nothing and want to know more of, and Firaxis chose the one Chinese philosopher that everyone knows. The other two, especially Machiavelli, are inspired choices.

China Civ always have got their emporor Leaders unless Mao, while Confucius have a very first chance at last. He was the one who really affected the whole history of Sinocentrism world after him, so he is totally fine (even deserved) to be the Leader in Civ 7 IMO.

At least Brazil had a few moments.

Ibn Batutta is a great choice, actually. I have no complaints about his inclusion at all. Probably the single most important source of information about the Islamic world we currently have access to.

Machiavelli is an okay choice. The CORRECT choice for the type of leader they were going for was Alcibiades or Cesare Borgia, but those two are lesser known with the public. Going directly for Machiavelli is acceptable alternative.

I don't like Kong as a leader, but he did exert a good amount of political influence and is probably the most impactful Chinese person to ever live. He vibes worse than he is because China has a vast array of choices.

The worst leader choice so far is Himiko. An antiquity leader who is made to fit modern Japan and only exists in Chinese records. It's a dicey choice, even if she has name recognition. She's a Gilgamesh for all intents and purposes. I hope her portrayal in the game is in line with Japan, and not China.

And just based on gameplay Ibn Battuta and Machiavelli are vehicles for some really interesting abilities. Confucious drew the short straw when it came to fun.

Given that our forecast is currently just a single civ reveal, less than we've had before, and Sar_Firaxis has been saying that the Modern stream reveal is coming "soon," I'll predict that this week will be giving us Mexico and the Modern stream reveal.

Mexico definitely has a 10% chance of being correct. I think it's the safest choice if you want to reveal very little at this point. But then again, maybe they'll do a Songhai and reveal them fully last. I hope they are next as they're the modern era civ which interests me the most.

I suspect that we are looking at:
Tuesday: Game Awards Main Theme Reveal

Thursday: Mexico Civ Guide

With the main theme reveal being the reason there's no First Look.

Ah, I had completely forgotten about the Game Awards! I think you're right here...

I wonder how much modern gameplay willl be revealed with the civ. Mexico presumably would have the cultural attribute some perhaps something about cultural victory.
We saw the Chola, Abbasids, and Normans before we got an inkling of Exploration gameplay with the Mongols. So I think it's pretty iffy that we will gain an understanding of what's going on in the Modern Age just from seeing Mexico. We will probably see some buildings and units though.

That's because of the Steam news :
Coming up, keep an eye out for a new guide for a certain Modern Age civ you may have caught on our last livestream.

Would that mean there might not be a Mesoamerican/Mexican leader in the base game?

They've already as part of the marketing for this game said that it was a mistake to release a civ game without Genghis Khan, so he's presumably in, but we've already seen Mongolia. If they don't announce Mexico with a matching leader, it might lower the probability but not to 0.

I don’t know how much one should read into that. It was a singular anecdote from an interview, and it referred to Civ 5.

Recall that the Mongols and Genghis were not in base game Civ 6 either, so I don’t think they meant to show some hard-and-fast rule.
